Very strong signal on 101, not so much on others - how to proceed?

Context: I am setting up my own satellite (for reasons I won't go into here). I have a very strong signal on 101, with pretty puny signals (15-30, with some zeros and lower digits thrown in) on 99ca, 99cb, 103ca, and 103cb.

First & less important question: are these other satellites still considered the 'ones you need' for the West Coast USA? My info may be out of date.

Second & more important question: With 101 locked in, is it theoretically possible to go from these low signals on 99ca, 99cb, 103ca, and 103cb to a stronger signal through fine-tuning/adjustment of the black dials alone (forgetting the term for this type of adjustment, but I am referring to the numbered black dials that look like guitar amp volume knobs)? The other possibility is that some branches are affecting these satellites, which I can maybe deal with.

The main question is - should I keep 101 locked in, since it's strong, and do you think it's possible to get stronger signal on the others just through fine tuning the black dials (assuming branches aren't the problem), or is the signal too low on those satellites for that to be likely/possible?

Thanks for any help.

All HD channels are on the 99/103 sats everywhere in the USA, you need to dither the 99 or 103 sat, there are videos on youtube that may help.

@shannon02 Thank you - 'dither' was the word I was looking for but could not remember.

So would you imagine you could get from a 15-30 signal on these satellites to a 80-90 signal through dithering alone, or do these low signals imply something more fundamentally wrong with the setup?

Yes dithering alone.

Thank you, I figured that would not be the case.

@litzdog911 I got a notification that you commented on this post (maybe something you deleted) but do not see any comment on the thread for some reason. 🤔

If either want to direct message me, would love to hear any comments you have. Cheers.

If that's even a feature of this forum.

I tried to post a link to a YouTube video showing how to align and dither the dish.

@litzdog911  Oh ok, thanks! I guess maybe the forum blocks links or YT links, but if it's your video, I have already been using it (probably have watched it 5x already in the last few months haha). I do find it a bit confusing, to be sure, but that video has given me a bit of confidence.

Though then I made the mistake of watching an old DirecTV training video that attempted to make aligning look easy, but did the opposite (the video with the laser).

What model box and what dish do you have?

Are you using a box you already had on the account or is another you've acquired? If the latter, has it already been activated with DirecTV?

Just want to make sure all answers match your equipment and no other issues as you mention some things may be "out of date".

@Juniper It's the HR54 receiver with DIRECTV SL3 4K Slimline Reverse Band 3 SWM Satellite Dish Antenna and DIRECTV Ultra HD 4K Digital Reverse Band 3 Satellite LNB.

Has not been activated yet - all equipment acquired through Solid Signal.

The HR54 receiver does not require a power inserter for the SWM LNB, as a note. This setup should work fine. Just follow along with the dithering process and you should be able to maximize signal from 99 and 103.

Just FYI. Unless your signal on 101 is in the high 90s with some 100s, it isn't "very strong".

@TexasBrit Thank you for the reminder - I guess I was pleased to have any relatively strong signal at all as a starting point - point taken.
