There are built in signal meters. In most cases you have to align the dish.

This is a tv message not a directv message, check your inputs make sure you're on the correct input

What is the exact error message you're seeing?
If just "No Signal" that is usually from the TV set. So you start checking the HDMI is secure on both ends and that the TV is on the correct input. Also be sure the HDMI-CEC is turned off and you aren't using a 'smart' power strip since they can mess with DirecTV boxes and their power state communicated with those new controls.
But if you're getting more than that, please post back with the specifics so we can point you in the right direction.
