What DirecTV receiver do I need for a 4k Smart TV?

I plan to purchase a 65" 4K Smart TV.  I currently have an HR44-500 DirecTV receiver.  Will that be compatible and sufficient for the 4K Smart TV?  Or, do I need to replace that model?  If I need to replace, what model receiver will I need?

the hr44 will work, and provide 1080 content

if you want 4k you will need

hr54+c61k

or

hs17+c61k

do you have other tvs?

if so what receivers do they have?

The HR44 would have to be swapped to the HR54 to support the 4K Client. Recordings do not transfer so be caught up first.

HR54 Genie on non 4K tv (Can connect to a 4K tv, but will not provide the 4K feed to it).

C61K Mini Genie Client (wired only at this time) on 4K tv.

Remember Client has no tuner of its own, uses 1 from the Genie.

4K tv must support HDCP 2.2, HDMI 2.0, and 60 FPS

DirecTV Installation, 4K tv must be there

Package Select or above as of 12/15/2016 (used to be only Ultimate or Premier). So only the Family package will not get 4K service at all.

At this time there are only a couple channels in 4K (plus a few PPVs).

Even if you have multiple C61K or RVU clients, only one tv can be using a 4K channel at a time.

Since there is limited 4K content, and recordings are not transferable, another option would be suggested. Consider upgrading an existing Client to an HDDVR. Gain 2 tuners and 500GB recording space. Works with the Genie, but isn't dependent on it, so unlike Clients can work if ever the Genie is down. Keep recordings on your existing HR44 and no difference in monthly cost as you are just paying for the authorized TV, regardless if Client, HDDVR, or even HD non-DVR.

My beer must have crack in it, because I don't understand anything you said.

"Upgrading an existing Client to an HDDVR"? "Gain 2 tuners"? "no difference in monthly costs"? The guy only has an HR44-500. What you mean Client? Why same cost if now have 2 receivers? AT&T loves hidden fees for everything, so you now get 2 tuners for free?

The only DTV receiver that can output 4K over HDMI is the C61K mini client so they will have to have 2 receivers.

@TomLe

The OP mentioned getting a 4K TV. Since the only way to get 4K is with a Client, I gave additional info in case they already had a Client (common with Genie users). So I was giving the additional information to prevent problems later on if they weren't informed completely by an agent.

You don't pay for tuners, so yes that is getting 2 tuners for free if replacing a Client. This is because the $7 is for the additional TV, regardless if connected by Client, HDDVR, or even HD non-DVR. So more tuners, recording space, and can work if the Genie doesn't, are reasons I suggest an HDDVR over a Client.

However, if the OP's HR44 is their only TV, then they shouldn't change equipment at all. Since 4K only works through the Client connection (HR54 was too far into production when the 4K requirements changed, so doesn't have the right port so they quickly made an updated Client, assumedly because cheaper than replacing motherboards in a whole line of new receivers), that would count a single TV as 2 TVs. Some people do that as they want to show off being a 4K user, but not something I would suggest.
