Why does one need to pay for DirectTV protective plan if we don't own the equipment?
I am confused about direct tv protection plan. From my understanding if i were to cancel Direct tv, i would need to return all of the equipment. However i to call and ask for receiver replacement i will be charged shipping cost unless i have protective plan. What am i missing? Why should i have protective plan for something i don't own?

The protection plan covers much more than just replacing receivers. It would cover dish replacement or repair, SWM components, cable runs, etc. You don’t need the protection plan, I’ve never had it. I have just paid the $20 shipping when I’ve needed a new receiver. I’ve been a customer since the time when we did own the receivers, I think only paying $20 for shipping to get a receiver replaced is great.

It's all up to you. Some folks like the peace of mind it gives to know they won't have to pay anything extra.

Protection plan is optional.
As customers we own everything but the receiver/client boxes.
The boxes are leased meaning they have an ongoing warranty (not just 12 months back when owned was an option). Per the Terms of Service (ToS) we pay $19.95 delivery if we need a replacement box. Be it 2, 5, or even 10 years later that is it.
Service calls to repair equipment we own (cabling, dish, multiswitch, etc.) are $99.
Remotes, an owned accessory are $15 (cheaper through mass retailers).
The protection plan covers all 3 of those costs. But at $8.99 a month ($107.88 a year), I don't find it a good value as you would need to use it constantly for it to be cheaper in the long run.
