Winegard Carryout G3 - Direct TV
We have a Winegard G3 Satellite dish and Direct TV service. It was working fine last year at our RV site and this year it won't.
We have spent hours on the phone with both Wineguard and Direct TV and the final answer was that we probably need to send our unwarranted dish in for repair. It is not the dish, the dish is powered, moving and finding signal. The Direct TV receiver is powered and active but not finding the dish. We have also replaced all the coax cable and went direct from the dish to the box just in case it was an issue with the RV. Could our issue be that Direct TV is no longer supporting MPEG-2 feeds and Direct TV just didn't tell us this?
Any help would be appreciated.

DirecTV started shutting down the MPEG-2 feeds in April 2019. Not 100% complete, but getting close to the finish line.
Need a slimline SWM dish on a tripod or sled mount, or the Winegard Trav'ler. The box must be an H or HR model (or special R22).

Thank you, Does Direct TV have a fix for this? I don't want to spend more money buying another dish....

@rkm0813 unfortunately there is no fix. The Winegard Carryout G3 is designed to only lock onto DIRECTV satellite 101, which carries all SD content that is in MPEG-2 format and will be shut off pretty soon. You will have to end up buying a new dish, a portable Slimline from Solid Signal or your preferred shopping service. Winegard also has a self-moving Slimline dish, although those are really expensive and not worth the investment unless used really frequently in my opinion.

Hello, @rkm0813. Let's check together what's going on with your DIRECTV equipment at your RV.
Please share with us the model of your DIRECTV equipment, it will help us to determine the root cause of your situation.
Also, do you happen to get an error code/message using these receivers?

@rkm0813 please ignore directv help as they neglected to listen to the entire conversation. As @Juniper and I said before, there is no fix other than getting a new slimline dish.

Agreed! We have troubleshooted all aspects of both the dish and box.
One quick question, if we have an H or HR model (or special R22) as Juniper mentioned then the MPEG-2 feed would not be the issue?

@rkm0813 no Juniper was mentioning that those receivers are compatible with the new HD MPEG-4 broadcast that DIRECTV is gearing toward for the future. Either way, you definitely need a new dish. However, if you already have an H or HR receiver (or the R22) then you don’t have to worry about getting a new Hi-Def receiver as those are able to receive HD MPEG-4.

The carryout G3 is the issue as only receives MPEG-2 which is mostly shutdown. You need an MPEG-4 receiving dish as mentioned, along with a box starting H or HR (or R22 if you have at least one of the others).

Ok. Got it, I misunderstood! I am so glad I came to this forum, we were about to send the G3 dish to be looked at! Thank you all for the help!

You're welcome. Unfortunately some outsourced or new agents aren't familiar with the MPEG-2 shutdown so lookup information that might be outdated or not the full picture of the situation.

Some are saying that the 101 will still be broadcasting select MPEG4 channels.

@shannon02 pretty doubtful because satellite 101 was designed from the beginning to carry MPEG2 SD channels. But still a possibility as MPEG4 takes up less space and bandwidth, would be a better overall option for DIRECTV, especially since satellite 101 has a broader coverage and stronger signal that will almost always work in most storms while people lose reception of 99 and 103.

detuch - you are confusing satellite slots with satellites. Satellite slots have multiple satellites. There is already a satellite at 101 delivering MPEG4. What directv has said in the past is that satellites at 101 will deliver a "selection" of channels in MPEG4 and if that's the case people with dishes that can only receive 101 will get that selection. But until directv tells everyone what the channels will be its difficult to make a recommendation.
So don't be too hasty about telling people with 101-only dishes they need to replace them with slimlines. I jst wish directv would issue an unamiguous statement about this.
