Can’t get pass the checking updates in setup...

Setting up new box, can’t get passed the checking for updates part of setup. Gives error 80003-001 code and to try again later. Tried through WiFi, and Ethernet at 2 different locations, so it’s definitely not network related. Reset device multiple times and still nothing. Any suggestions?

Good morning @BrentU,

Thanks for reaching out! We'll be happy to look further into this error for you.

Just to verify, which device and service are you receiving this error code on? Also, is there a message with that error code? If possible, please provide a screenshot.

@DIRECTVhelp - If you had bothered to look up the error code (it took me about 20 seconds), you'd see it is specific to the DIRECTV streamer (Osprey). And taking a "screen shot" (which in this case means an actual photo of a TV screen) seems very unlikely to provide any more info than the code itself.

Yes, it's nice to have as much info as possible when you look at an issue, but sometimes a bit of checking will tell you that you already have the info you are asking for and pushing it back on the user just delays things and risks further irritating a user that is already likely getting exasperated.

@BrentU - how quickly does the error occur? When you say you "reset", are you doing a soft reset (press and release the red button on the side of the box) or a hard reset of the box (hold the red button until the display shows the logo)? The update can be very slow, but that message indicates it timed out, which might happen if their server is very busy but shouldn't happen multiple times.

A report from some time ago from a user reporting the same issue included this suggested fix:

OK. I was able to get the device to update using recovery mode. The device must be plugged into a working Ethernet port, then press the red reset button. As soon as you see the logo appear with message "Powered by androidtv", reboot the box again. Repeat the red button reboot on the logo 5 times. After 5 reboots, you will see logo appears without any message. Then a message "System Updating. This could take a few minutes" is displayed. The box should then Download and install updates. There is NO TURNING back at this point until the update has completed. Mine did successfully and the box is up and running no with no other issues.

and several others reported that helped them also, so you may want to give it a try.

so this didn't work, it forced updates, but then as soon as it was almost done, or it was done, it restarted, then started back on the checking for updates, and failing to do so again!

I see the post from the previous poster that they got the box to update in “recovery mode”. How do I get into “recovery mode”?

While I have never done it myself, the instructions given above are how that user claimed to get into recovery mode.

Bought a box off eBay and encountered the checking for updates issue.  So, after searching, reading, and much trial and error I was able to get into recovery mode.  Here is some detail on my successful proceedure. Hope it helps someone else:

Got stuck at “Checking for Updates” after connecting to the internet

Solution:

  1. Hook up an ethernet cable to the device.
  2. Hard reset by pushing the red button for ~10 sec until you see the Logo on the TV
  3. Immediately soft reset (momentary red button push) 7 times in a row when  Logo appears on the TV
  4. Device should come back up and do a “System Update” download and install (`20 min)
  5. After the System Update is complete it will reboot and succeed with Checking for Updates (`10 min)
  6. After selecting “Get Google” it got stuck with “Please Wait”. Unplug and let it restart to clear.  May have to soft reset if still stuck.

Hokieetown....

I also purchased a box from eBay and cannot get past the "checking for updates". I tried everything, including your instructions above but it still freezing at that point with the error message 80003-001

Any other ideas? I have 3 of these boxes and none of them get past that point

Caesar9965,

After doing the hard reset with the long red button push, make sure you wait for the Logo to reappear on the TV before each of the 7 times that you do the soft resets. After the 7th reset, the "System Update" message appeared on the TV for me and started.

Good luck...hope you have success!

Thanks... do I push the red button 7 times at once or allow the soft reset to finish each time?

(Meaning is it 7 quick pushes or wait the 5 minutes for the reset between each push)

Push it when the logo reappears

Just to be clearer, you push it when the logo 1st appears, after about 15 seconds or so....you don't wait for the reset to completely finish, which takes a few minutes

Now my screen is stuck on "Downloading Updates - this may take a little while" this is Day 2 of trying to do all these hard reboots/soft reboots...this is ridiculous. I called Tech yesterday and all they did was search through forums (just like I did).

It took me a while to get the timing right but after I did, I was able to reset 3 boxes in about an hour
