iphone to TV HDMI connection won't play content

Using the mobile app, on my IPhone,  I have an adapter to an HDMI cord that plugs it in directly into the TV. I have three TVs and no desire to pay for the extra boxes/remotes since my Apple Airplay only works on one of them.  I was happy for a moment when the TV seem to be mirroring the screen of my iPhone, but upon opening the DTV mobile app and trying to play a local channel from the guide, although the phone played the station, I got a "No connection" screen on my TV. Same story for trying to play a DVR recording. This same kind of connection works fine connecting my MacBook Eyre to the TVs.

A half hour on the phone with DIRECTV "support" ended with "I guess if it doesn't work, it's not going to work". They claim that no one else has ever tried this before, and that it was not because of any conscious policy of DIRECTV, that it didn't work. I can't believe that no one has contacted them about this problem.   Has anyone else tried this, or have a solution?   My bright idea of signing in to DIRECTV on the Internet via my iPhone , yielded no result yielded no joy.

BTW,  in dealing with the support team on the phone, it is clear that they have taught to be overly polite. I advise that you give them a brief description, and immediately stop and ask if this is the right department. They have consistently let me ramble on for minutes at a time only to say "wrong department" since they have been trained, never to interrupt the client, I guess.

You posted in DIRECTV STREAM.  Is that what you have, or do you have DIRECTV Satellite service?

Don't know what to call it, no dish, no cable, Gemini "box".  Downloaded to my smart tv.  Reading in the Apple forum,  it may be that it's something in their newer system updates that started causing this about 2 yrs ago.  I have certainly lost faith in the veracity of the DTV text support who swore up and down that they had access to all prior questions, and that no one had brought this up.  Just reading this thread gives the lie to that.

DIRECTV STREAM and DirecTV via Internet are the new streaming-only services. Naturally traditional DirecTV which is satellite requires a dish, which you don't have. That means you have STREAM/Via Internet.

Historically, the DirecTV app did not allow Airplay or any other option to cast to TV because they were designed to have a dedicated box at each, not get the service on a regular TV for free by using a workaround. The streaming-only services work a bit differently, but both satellite with secondary internet streaming perks and the others just for streaming now use a single app instead a separate one built for each.
