Canceling my contract, am I responsible for returning the dish?

My contract expires next February.  I would like to cancel now.  A "loyalty" department representative said I would be responsible for detaching the dish from my roof and mailing it back to DirecTV.  Is this true?

The dish itself belongs to you.  Most recommend that you do not attempt to remove the base, even if you remove the dish part, because it tends to greatly increase the chance of leaks when removed.

Once you have cancelled, the other equipment must be returned; take it to a nearby The UPS Store or FedEx Office (one of the two business storefronts, not a drop-off location or an actual shipping office for the two carriers) along with your DIRECTV account number.  They will give you a receipt (hang on to that thing until you're sure the equipment has been properly recorded as returned on your account), and box / ship the equipment back.

Be prepared to pay the Early Termination Fee based on the number of months remaining on your contract.

Only the receiver/client boxes get returned. Once installed, everything else you own. Leave mounting plate to avoid leaks. Dish goes to metal recycling, the LNB (the "eye") goes with electronics.

To see what is returnable, what models are each of your boxes?

Agents of any company are required to try an retain a customer by making a legitimate offer (even if it is just "reselling the value" if there are no specials). Naturally they would track retention stats for job performance reviews, incentives, etc. But such an attempt should be in reason as in the end it is your decision which should be respected.

Remember early cancellation fee (ECF) is valued at $20 for each month you have remaining. So next February would be 10 months at most with an expected ECF of $200 (or $180 if 9 months based on exact date). Also you still pay for the entire service month, no matter how many days into it you cancel, as they no longer prorate the bill.

Thank you.  I found it hard to believe that I'd REALLY be responsible for returning it but that was what I was told by a representative that got increasingly frustrated when I said I didn't want to go through the beatdown of trying to convince me to stay.  I said that I didn't want to be rude and that my mind had been made up.  That just seemed to frustrate her more.

You have to call DTV to cancel and you will be billed and receive service until the end of the billing cycle.

You have to call DirecTV. When you get the voice prompt say "cancel" so you are routed directly.

Be aware you pay for the entire service month, no matter how many days within it you close the account. Alternatively DirecTV is nationwide so you have the option of moving the service with you.

What models are each of your boxes? That will determine if returnable or not.

How To Return The Equipment 

Go to a FedEx or UPS location with your account #. No need to bring a box or label, the equipment will be boxed up & shipped out at no charge. The process takes less than 5 minutes.

I  was totally mislead by your sales lady when I changed my contract in Feb! 

I discovered that Direct TV was charging me for the ultimate package (movies etc..) I never signed up for THAT! Never watched a tv movie since I was a kid! Your sales gal told me "no problem; she changed my contract and removed the movie channels. I told her I only want to watch golf and the cable news channels.

Golf friends came over to watch the Masters; NO ESPN! embarrassing. Directv defaulted on my contract and I returned your equipment UPS. Don't you dare bill me again!

This is not a private support channel.  Please do not post your account number for the public to see.  A statement posted here carries even less weight than a note stuck in to the envelope with a check to a payment processor.

Not "our" sales lady any more than yours. This is a public forum of other customers.

ESPN and ESPN2 are in Entertainment and up. ESPNews and ESPNU Choice and up. So all 4 of those are available in the Ultimate package.

If you don't make use of the Encore channels (what I assume you mean by "movies"), then the Ultimate package is too high. I would review the channels you do enjoy to see what the right package would be: DIRECTV Channel Lineup List (att.com)

If you cancel while under contract then you will be charged for the ECF. There is no guarantee of an exact service with the agreement. It just means you get a certain promotion by staying with DirecTV for that time. Remember programming and services available are subject to change at any time.

And if you did not contact DIRECTV to cancel your service, you should know that your post will not do so. Returning your equipment will not do so.  Only calling them up and explicitly canceling your service will end your billing (and possibly trigger the ETF, but a month of ETF is much lower than the full monthly service fee, which is what you'll be paying until you cancel).
