Phone call message claiming to be from DirecTV.

I got a voicemail from 810-267-xxxx that states this:

Hi there, I'm calling you from AT&T and DirecTV to let you know that your existing account qualifies for a 50% discount that can save you money on your monthly bills, and you can also check for the eligibility of getting a free phone.  In order to avail the promotion, please call us back on the same number from 8 AM to 5 PM according to Pacific Standard Time.  Don't miss out on the savings.  Thank you and have a good day.

Is this a scam?  How does this scam even work?  I have a good deal with DirecTV already.

It is a scam.  No legitimate caller will use both business names anymore.  AT&T no longer owns DIRECTV.

They will likely ask you to prepay for service to get a discount.  If they ask for a gift card, you'll know for sure it's a scam.  But they'd probably also take a credit card number, because they can run that up, too.

DirecTV never calls to offer discount. You call the official number (not using your phone's callback even if displayed number seems legit).

The 50% off is a well known scam. They have you "prepay" for months of service, preferably by gift card as non-traceable and you have essentially 0 chance getting it back.

Also AT&T sold DirecTV last year, with that transaction completing July 2025. Further red flags that the voicemail it says AT&T and DirecTV along with a phone promotion.

And if you call but don't give them info, they know they have a live one and can increase the number of scams you receive as it just takes once to make it all worth it.

Thanks for being a customer, and yes, this is a scam, @kjstech. Avoid engaging with these fraudsters and do not call them back. They may request upfront payments via prepaid or gift cards for fake promotions—DIRECTV never solicits prepayments. Stay safe! Fraud and social engineering threats are common, so awareness is key. "please call us back on"

Is that even US-English? I've always said "call me at ____."

Its a scam!

I get these calls all the time and as a dealer I keep these (Edited per community guidelines) on the phone for a good 30-45 minutes while they think I am going to the store to buy a gift card

If you think they're paying long-distance fees, they're not.

I have had Xfinity/AT& T direct tv for over 3 years. This last week I got a voicemail letting me know that my AT&T direct tv 50% discount will be ending if I don't respond to the number on the caller id. I tried to call the number back but it was a non working number. So I was very disappointed because in the beginning of get signed up with the 50% discount it seemed legit. Very dissatisfied customer with AT&T to tell you the least.

That was a crook. The 50% scam is well known by this point. DirecTV doesn't call you to offer discounts.

This is no reason to be disappointed by AT&T. Primarily because that wasn't them that called you. It was someone pretending.

Also AT&T finished selling off DirecTV last year. So they are no longer the owner as got out of the TV business.
