Whole home DVR
Was told by customer service that I could not cancel my Whole Home DVR "Feature". That it was required. I dont have a Genie, dont have kids in the house, and have two standalone DVR's.

@Juniper The thing is, I didn't want to have DVR. I don't want it and won't use it. But I wasn't given the option of not having it. All I wanted to do is upgrade from SD to HD. I have one box and one TV. That's it. Should there be an option that isn't Genie and doesn't have DVR that DTV is somehow not telling me about?

Yes “Juniper”, I have have been a non stop customer since July 1996. Went from Sony Receiver round Dish, (SD), I bought from Incredible Universe. Then an HR-20 when HD arrived. New Dish. Then to current HR-24. I was having some receiver problems with my current HR-24 like ten years ago. They sent me another HR-24. Problem corrected itself. And they told me to keep the second new receiver in case I have the problem again. Never did. So, it’s been sitting in the box all these years.
Had my ancient dish replaced with a new SW3 the other day because of storm damage. Now have an adapter plugged in the wall to power this new dish. :(
I really want 4K. But, they keep telling me I need a Genie receiver. Even for streaming on my Roku device. Makes no sense. I’ve given up.
That’s my life with DTV. Haha

DirecTV is service by satellite. So of course to get 4K you must have a 4K equipment upgrade. They are not going to give you a streaming-only option when that is not what their service is about.
4K requires either 3rd generation Genie (HR54) or Genie-2 (HS17) with a 4K Mini Genie (C61K) on the 4K TV itself. But 4K content is so limited I wouldn't worry about it. As a consumer, it is not cheap being an early adopter for pretty much anything.
That other HR24 would most likely be refurbished, as nothing guarantees it to be brand new. So if your HR24 ever goes out be prepared they may not be able to activate the other one as has been way too long. But as long as the current HR24 wasn't purchase to own then you would just do a warranty replacement. But be aware they haven't made them in years and stock is dwindling. Part of it was AT&T was pushing DirecTV to a Client-only setup (hence why the Genie-2 doesn't allow anything else), and anything before SWM-only is grandfathered.

The only way to get 4K without having the proper equipment is switching to DTV via the internet AKA DTV streaming.

DirecTV is pretty much DVR-only going forward. I doubt the new co-owner will change that, but we shall see.
If still available, you could upgrade to an HD non-DVR. The last model made was the H25. That would save your $13 a month as would just be the $10 a month for the HD service. But if it hasn't been at least 2 years since your last upgrade to qualify for a free one, the one-time lease cost would be $99.

Thanks for your help. I’ll just keep everything the way it is. Once there is more 4K programming available, I will revisit the situation. Don’t mean to Hijack this thread any longer.
