Why do I have to pay for a DIRECTV service that I want to cancel?

I called to today to cancel DIRECTV.  I was informed the service will not be cancelled until next billing cycle which is April 1.

My autopay does not happen for another 10 days.

Why do I have to pay for service that I do not want.

Any suggestions

As of a couple years ago, they no longer prorate the final bill. So cancellation goes through the end of the billing month. Here is the notice from 2018 (kept mine for reference).

Please read this if you receive DIRECTV, AT&T U-verse® TV, AT&T Internet, AT&T Phone, and/or AT&T Fixed Wireless service(s). We want to remind you that you’re billed in advance for recurring service(s) and/or programming charges and applicable fees based on the terms of your current service agreement(s) with us. Starting January 14, 2019, subject to applicable laws, we’re updating your agreement(s) to include your recurring service(s)/programming charges and fees won’t be prorated if you cancel the above service(s) on any day other than the last day of your billing cycle. Your service(s) will continue until the end of your billing cycle but you won’t get a refund (prorated credits) for any remaining days left in your billing cycle. For products not listed above, refer to their terms of service for more information.

Questions about this change? Go to att.com/ProrationPolicy for more information and to see the revised section of your service agreement(s).

I called to cancel mine on the 10th of the month. I was specifically told by a Jamie that yes we are billed for the month ahead and since I had just paid my bill that the only amount I would have to pay is the 40.00 cancellation fee. Then they proceeded to take out of my bank account the 150.41 on the 22nd  of the month and then took out another 150.41 on the 23rd. I spoke to Lester on the 23rd. Explained the whole thing again and thought it was taken care of. I went back on to pay the 40 only to find out they are still charging me the monthly, which just went up more and I feel the service isn't worth that much and that is why I was getting rid of it. The 4th call was today where I spoke to an awesome man named Manuel. He tried everything he could do to get it all finalized. Unfortunately he still had to transfer me to another lady named Amora in a different part of billing. Worthless! She made it clear once again about the billing cycle, over and over again. I asked them to please listen to the audio of my first discussion with Jamie where he specifically told me I will only be paying 40.00. This is the frustrating part of signing up with these places! They DO NOT care about customer service!!!!  DO NOT SIGN UP WITH THESE PEOPLE!!!!

I would check your bill for the service dates.

Day 1 service month starts.

Day 2 bill produces. Paid if on auto bill pay with a credit card.

Day 15 paid if on auto pay with debit card/EFT.

Day 20 is listed due date if not on auto bill pay.

So the 22nd may have been your auto bill pay date for that bill cycle. But the later payments are concerning as that means the account either wasn't canceled, or there were final one-time charges afterwards such as Early Cancellation Fee (ECF), non-return fee (NRF), or even unbilled PPVs found on access cards upon return. As for 2 payments back to back within a day of each other, that makes no sense at all.

Call DirecTV back. When you get the voice system say "cancel" which should route you directly. Verify the account is closed to begin with. Normally the retention/cancellation agents are more experienced so should be able to figure out what is going on in this situation compared to a front line agent. Good luck.

I have had Directv for 30 years. My directv bill has gone up significantly since AT&T bought out directv. I have called several times trying to get promo codes or someone to lower my bill. I finally just gave up. When I called to cancel my directv... AT&T response was: WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO PROCESS THAT NOW?  I finally just said yes. When searching for an alternate television service, the lowest price I could find was with SLING. Then I found out that T-Mobile offered a television plan... with all the same channels as DTV ($140.) for only $40.!!! They also offer to buy out your cellphone contract and provide the same cell service for only (wait for it) $35. per month!!!  So I am thinking that AT&T actually did me a favor 🤔

Yep, reality is promos will not always be available. So it is your responsibility to arrange service within your budget, not constantly call begging for discounts. TV is just entertainment after all, not a life requirement.
