2nd hd receiver

I have Genie system with 2 mini clients. I am wanting to replace one of the little clients with a second HD receiver (hd 25) purchased online so I can take it out of the house and use in my motor home when I am traveling. Will Directv let me do that?

Directv won't activate the H25 unless you got it from them or from an authorised dealer. Receivers on ebay or similar are leased and are not owned by the "seller"

Additionally if you have a genie 2 you can't use regular receiver with it, only mini clients and of course they won't work outside the house.

Hopefully you didn't purchase that through eBay, Craig's list, or any other independent source. Boxes are leased so still owned by DirecTV and cannot be transferred between customers. You should find out if usable before purchasing.

If you have any "Genie" other than the Genie-2 (HS17) than in theory you can use the H25 if gotten from a legitimate source. Will need a slimline SWM dish on a tripod/sled mount, or the Winegard Trav'ler, in the RV. All older dishes are not compatible with the H25, and the HS17 only allows Clients.

If it works, then you will need to return the Client if still a returnable model.

NO--The receiver will make a great Door stop for you! --You could call directV about ask about RV service --It will require additional Signup fee and a monthly charge and they still won't activate any receiver you may purchased from any source.

If from an authorized retailers (such as Solid Signal), then the box should be activatable. But with the transition to the new billing account system and no longer reactivating owned or MPEG-2/SD-only boxes, they have had issues activating boxes not directly through them.

So they should if from an "authorized" source, but there have been technical issues to do so.

@juniper

the OP has a HS-17 and wants a HD receiver to take in an RV --the OP should either Remove the HS-17 and replace it with a Hr54 (which is a Cost) then add a HD receiver (at a Cost) --Compile those COSTS and compare it to Keeping his current setup and buying a RV package from D* ---Best to safe rather than buying any equipment before the OP is sure of just what he wants to do.

I have Genie system with 2 mini clients.

The OP doesn't say they have the Genie-2 (HS17). So as long as they have a regular Genie (HR34, HR44, HR54 / HR54R1), or even the Genie Lite (H44), they can have other receivers.

I agree that even through authorized retailers would not be suggested right now with the activation problem they have had recently.

Thanks for the information. My current receiver is hr54. Is Solid Signal the only authorized retailer? I can just just use the hr54 in the rv. Just figured a second receiver would be more convenient. When Directv pulled the plug on sd receivers it left us rv owners with lots of useless equipment.

@Rgsticks

SS is the most trusted source for leased D*TV Equipment or just Call 1-800-531-5000 and say you wish to change out one mini for a HD receiver --either way it's your choice

Yes you can use the HR54 or H25 in the RV provided you have a SWM slimline dish either mounted on a tripod/sled mount or a roof mounted Winegard/KVH HD dish.  weaknees.com is also a DTV dealer.

Since you have the HR54, you absolutely can have an HD non-DVR (i.e. H25) or HDDVR (i.e. HR24) instead of a Client. Since this is a replacement, call DirecTV. It will be a 24 month service agreement regardless of getting through DirecTV or Solid Signal (very reputable authorized retailer), but with Solid Signal it will be one-time lease cost of $99 or $199 respectively as only through DirecTV itself can you get a free upgrade.

If Genie and Clients is all you have, then most likely they would not need a tech and instead just ship the box as your SWM should be able to handle the increase from 5 to 6 tuners (or 7 since HDDVR has 2 tuners.

The RV will need a slimline SWM dish on a tripod/sled mount, or the Winegard Trav'ler. Any old MPEG-2/SD-only dish is no longer compatible as those feeds are shutting down.

You will need a power inserter with the H25.
