$8.99 monthly fee vs. $99 service call fee
Was on the phone trying to resolve a 771 signal issue I was having for over 2 weeks and the rep tells me that there is either a $99 one time fee for a "service call" for a tech to come out or a $8.99 monthly equipment "warranty" fee...never heard of this. Is this new? Does not seem fair as I am not at fault for the issue with the equipment/satellite. Feeling totally ripped off. Just another way for ATT to tack on another monthly fee.

Before you make an appointment go around to all coax connections and make sure they are snug. I had the same error and it turned out to be the cable connected to a wall plate had loosened up from all the years of bumping it with a vacuum

I’m pretty sure they mean the monthly protection plan. It’s not new. It’s been available for years. If you sign up to avoid the $99 fee, I have no idea if there is a minimum number of months required. If you describe your 771 issue and identify your equipment, I’m sure one of the knowledge folks here can help you determine if a tech visit is really needed.

Service call $99
Delivery of replacement box is $19.95
Remotes $15.
The optional Equipment Protection Plan $8.99 monthly covers those costs. But at a value of $107.88 a year whether you use it or not, the one-time costs are cheaper in the long run. And remotes tend to be cheaper online as well.
The protection plan has been an option for years before AT&T acquired DirecTV. It can be good for people who need a small known cost in their monthly bill even if they pay more in the long run. But if you are good with managing reserve funds, the one-time costs as needed would be fine as are not needed often.
Upon install you own everything but the receiver/client boxes. So sending a tech at a cost is because they are working on equipment you own.
