Any way to still use the SD legacy receiver or if not, then any way to use the old antenna with a supported receiver?
We like our original Directv receiver and antenna, but they appear to be forcing us to upgrade.
The toll-free help hasn't been helpful, and so I'm turning to the forum in hopes somebody can come up with a satisfactory setup. We like our original SD "legacy" receiver (RCA DRD486RH) because it has CallerID and just works well with our older television setup. But the toll-free support has refused to get a new access card working with it. So question #1: Are they able to do this and who do I achieve this with?
Instead, they sent a Genie receiver, which does not appear to be detecting the antenna in the "SWM check". So question#2: is there a supported receiver that will work with my old round antenna dish?
Not happy about having to switch when we have been customers for 20 years. If we have to change out antenna too then we would probably use this opportunity to change providers. Hoping somebody here can offer help to keep us up and running. Thank you.

ONCE AGAIN----D*TV will NO longer Install a DISH on a Chimney or LEAVE the Ladder to install a Dish on your ROOF -- You could always search your Zipcode for any SAT installers (D*TV) Resellers --they may be able to help you --however you will have to PAY out of pocket for that --so expect NO "FREE" install

I understand that--
I'm asking instead whether the mount exists to achieve what I want. It needs to be longer to space the larger dish farther from the chimney (whether I do it myself or have someone else). Are there extension tubes available that could accomplish it, or preferably a single arm ?

The OP has understood that equipment must be replaced. They are asking some guidance as are wanting to DIY the existing location for a replacement receiving dish instead of having DirecTV coming out and doing a standard install.
@legacycustomer
As a note, going this route for the dish location means little to no support from DirecTV in the future on repairs or possible other upgrades as they will not have access to the new dish. So plan it will be DIY for a lot of things going forward.

You need 2" OD fence post to make a mast/mount for the slimline dish, DTV doesn't have or make anything to mount a slimline dish on a chimney and as stated if you go this route you will have to do all maintenance yourself going forward.

Thanks again for the discussion. Unfortunately, the new antenna/dish needed for HD reception was a dealbreaker. I'm just an SD sort of guy.
So now I have an 18-inch round dish with the LNB pointed I guess at the 103 satellite.
Question: Is there any free broadcasts that I could receive with it? What receiver would you recommend? Which satellite direction would give the most channels?
And is the directv SD receiver totally useless now? I hate to see stuff go like that....
Thank you for any thoughts!

@legacycustomer ,
1. Your old 18" 'dish is actually pointed at the 101ºW satellite, not 103.
2. No, there are no free broadcasts that you can receive.
3. No equipment will get you anything with that dish.
4. It doesn't matter what direction you aim that dish.
5. Yes, your old dish and equipment are essentially boat anchors now.

That receiving dish is for DirecTV only. They do not provide free broadcasts.
You may be an "SD kind of guy" but the world no longer is. SD TVs haven't been made in over a decade, DirecTV grandfathered SD-only service in late 2015, and continued with their plan to start shutting down the MPEG-2/SD-only feeds in April 2019 (though not complete per internal challenges and then Covid).
The SD-only boxes only receive MPEG-2, so are incapable of receiving the MPEG-4 feed.
To stay SD-only means getting a VCR and collecting old VHS tapes as you can. Sorry but the tech has moved forward, like audio cassette, floppy disks, and regular(leaded) gasoline before it one must adapt or be left behind.

Thank you for the last two posts.
I just wanted to make sure that I had gotten everything I possibly could out of things before sending them into the recycling stream.
From what I read it sounds like the minimum dish size is 30 inches. I just don't understand why an 18-inch dish wouldn't be able to pick up the same signals. Is it again a matter of high definition requiring a broader dish?
p.s. You may have guessed that I still don't have a smartphone but the candybar style.

Because the 101 99 103 sats are to far apart for a round dish to receive them at the same time, only the oval slimline dish is made to receive them at the same time.

New receiving dish is made broader to acquire the 3 needed satellites all at once.
Not everybody needs a smart phone. A simple bar or flip phone can be fine. Though just make sure it is not as outdated as your DirecTV equipment since phone providers have to discontinue certain prior services to make room for the new signal (such as some areas lose 3G so they can get 4G, 4G LTE, or 5G.

That must be why they are charging me $5 a month more now just to keep the candybar phone.
As for the dish size question: I was referring to receiving free-to-air satellite. From what I read the dish needs to be 30 inches. Is it still being pointed at those same 3 satellites (101 99 103) ?
Are there no free-to-air satellites that could use the 18" round dish?
(I realize this question might be beyond the scope of this forum, but I'm hoping somebody can at least indicate if there is potential for the 18" dish)
Thank you.

There are no "free-to-air satellite" services that can use that dish.

The receiving dish can only use DirecTV service. There aren't any "free" options it can use, sorry.
The additional $5 should not be because of what generation of service it uses. I would compare against the prior bills to see perhaps a promotion finished or they advised of a rate change (their costs go up then so do ours at some point). If that doesn't explain it then I would ask the next time you call AT&T.

You need a OTA antenna to get OTA channels not a satellite dish and you have to connect it to a digital OTA tuner that may or may not be built in to the TV.
