directv is taking away a local station I receive on my standard definition receiver
Directv sent me a letter stating that I will be losing local station KPXN-30 next month unless I update my standard receiver to a HD receiver. Since it is a local station in Los Angeles, I believe the FCC must carry rule prevents that from happening. Why do I have to get a new HD antenna and HD receiver and end up paying more than I am now? The letter states DirecTv will upgrade my 2 receivers for free but the fine print says I will pay addtional HD related fees. If that's true I will be dropping DirecTv.

DTV is shutting down the MPEG2 SD channels so to continue with DTV you will have to have MPEG4 receivers and dish. DTV carries all channels in MPEG4 so are complying with FCC rules.

DirecTV is in the process of shutting down the MPEG-2/SD-only feeds. It has been over a decade since a SD-only TV has been made. The MPEG-4 feeds do carry the remaining SD version of the channels, at least for now until the time those get shut down as well.
Sorry but you are using outdated equipment. It is an HD world. Just like cassettes and floppy disks, legacy tech will not be supported forever. The shutdown was to start in 2019, but because of internal challenges and then the pandemic it has slowed. This means you got extra time to catch up.
You should get a MPEG swap (do not say upgrade), as that will be without a new service agreement. They will need to schedule a tech to install a new dish with this. What are the model of each box you have now?

HD service itself is $10 and covers the account. Though with a MPEG swap, at the beginning they were credited it as required to continue using the service. Unknown if they are still doing that.
