Directv system with DVRDaddy started freezing after 2 years
Directv and genies were freezing up on both live and when watching recordings. DVR daddy was 75% full. Ran a test, turned of system and unplugged DVRdaddy and freezing problem is completely gone. And yes, i had tried resetting and disconnecting power on Directv receiver first many times. For those of you with freezing issues, if you are using an external hard drive see if this fixes your problem just be sure to turn off power before disconnecting or it may corrupt your settings. Comments from ATT?

What is DVRDaddy? Never heard of it. Based on your last comment, I'll presume it's an external hard drive. Not surprising that an external hard drive could cause freezing issues if there is an issue with that drive.

Yes DVRDaddy provides external drives/expansion storage. Definitely some good things to try when having issues.
What model is the Genie?

HR54 I think, hate to lose my 5TB of recorded content but those freeze ups are a show stopper. The external drive was great while it lasted, the HR54 filled up about 4 weeks after I got it 🤬

Ok good you've got a newer model of Genie. Just wanted to be sure you didn't have the 1st generation (HR34) as that is sub-standard to the HR44 and HR54/HR54R1.
Wow, 5TB is certainly some space. I would suggest if you have other TVs, to make sure you have HDDVRs, not Mini Genie Clients. Each HDDVR has 2 tuners (so not stealing 1 from the Genie like a Client), and 500GB recording space of their own. Plus they do also support external hard drives (though a hard cap of 2TB). A way to increase storage, and not worrying about the risk of a single point of failure losing everything as you do with all on a single drive.

weaknees.com also sells external hard drives and I believe there are other companies that do to.

DVR Daddy is not proprietary to DirecTV. It is just a brand of external hard drive.
DirecTV just needs an eSATA external hard drive (preferably with fan enclosure). Must be larger than the internal drive to be worth it as is used instead of it.
Genie has 1TB. Up to 4TB external was suggested, though no official hard cap. Some have used 12+TB successfully (overkill in my opinion).
Regular HDDVRs have 500GB internal. Has a hard cap of 2TB external.
Genie-2 (HS17) has 2TB internal. Like regular Genie, no known hard cap on external. However, only the original run had the eSATA port. Newer models can't use external drives.
