Directv - What DVR is compatible with Genie HR54 Receiver and Genie Minis Model C41W?

I currently have an HR54 receiver with mini genies model C41W attached to other tv's in my home for Directv service. I need to add a separate DVR for just one TV.
Does anyone know what DVRs are compatible to my existing Directv service with an HR54 as my receiver and genie minis?  Also, are they available to buy online and plug and play?

Thanks in advance.

All DTV receivers are leased only so no you can't buy one,

Only the HR24 may still be available to be leased.

There was a problem activating receivers on AT&Ts new RC1 account system with receivers leased from third party dealers like Solid Signal or weaknees.com unknown if fixed.

You would need an HR24. It would have to come from directv but there are many posts saying directv is no longer making them available.

HR54 is the 3rd generation of the regular Genie line. As such it supports HDDVRs (HR20 thru HR24) to be used with or instead of Mini Genie Clients. There are no wireless receivers, only Clients, so would need to be tech installed on the coax.

The HR24 is the last regular HDDVR made. But stock is dwindling as they seem to be pushing ahead with a Client only setup, like the Genie-2 (HS17).

You cannot purchase any of these to own. DirecTV has been a lease only model for years. Doesn't affect the monthly bill. If you don't have a free upgrade then the one-time lease cost of a HDDVR is $199. Only through DirecTV itself can you get a free upgrade. Authorized retailers (like Solid Signal) may only do the one-time lease cost.

Even if you don't' have a free upgrade, go through DirecTV itself. There has recently been problems with activating boxes from authorized 3rd parties. Don't know if fixed or not, or why it was a problem, but best to play it safe on that.

Thank you both.  I cannot find where to order additional equipment online with my account...

I am hoping I can make this happen with a representative over the phone tomorrow!

Thanks again!

Currently you must call DirecTV. Unfortunately AT&T has been struggling on integrating the full features of the DirecTV legacy website into theirs since the acquisition. Challenges resulting from the pandemic has just made it that much harder for them. So it will be a while until it has functionality like we as a consumer would expect.

Hi @h82quit1! We'll be happy to answer your questions about our Directv Equipment.

The best compatible device with your HR54 main receiver is another Genie Mini that will allow you to fully enjoy the benefits and advantage of the Genie technology.

Here you can review additional information about our Genie equipment.

To order a new Genie Mini, please let us know when you're ready to do so and we'll be happy to process the order for you.

Maria, AT&T Community Specialist.

@ATTHelp

Maria that is NOT correct. A HDDVR has 2 tuners and 500GB recording space and works independently of the Genie. Doesn't have to be connected to it (detached garage, RV, etc.). Can set recording list to be hidden from others if you want some privacy (great for parent's bedroom if they have young children with parental controls on rating limits on other TV.

A Client takes a tuner from the Genie. Cannot work by itself since it is not a receiver (no tuners). No hard drive so everybody can delete other recordings since one shared drive. Must be physically on the same coax as the main Genie. If that Genie goes down then all Clients go with it.

So a Client has reduced capability compared to an HDDVR. There are 3 reasons where it might be preferred.

1. Smaller form factor. If you want to try and hide behind TV or such for aesthetics.

2. Only Clients have a wireless version (C41W and C61W) if you have a room that is not good to run coax or want box to move around the house.

3. If you want to use the couple 4K channels. The C61K is the only 4K model so far (needing the HR54, or HS17 as the main Genie).

Hello All,

Thank you for your valuable feedback.  I reached a rep with Directv today who was knowledgable about the capability of adding an HR24 to my system with the HR54.  He advised me that at&t is no longer offering HR24's, even as replacements for those that are going bad.  He said there would be no problem activating a HR24 purchased from Solid State, as they are new.  But cautioned me to call Directv before purchasing from any other 3rd party with Box ID and serial # to verify box was usable.

AT&T better being preparing to launch for DirecTV a newer model HDDVR, such as with updated specs and SWM-only (to be up to par with the current Genies). Otherwise they are downgrading their setup and hard restricting customer flexibility.

I would use an R22 over a Mini Genie Client (or RVU Client) any day of the week. I refuse to give up my customer freedoms because a provider wants a cookie cutter setup to force everyone into.

AT&Ts new RC1 account system will not activate any deactivated receivers so there is no need to call with RID and both Solid Signal and weaknees.com lease refurbished receivers so they are not "new"

@Shannon02 - Are you saying that at&t will not activate any HR24 that I obtain through Solid Signal or otherwise to my account?

Thanks.

We don't know, all we know is when AT&T started the RC1 account a few years ago there where problems posted here about receivers leased from Solid Signal and weaknees.com not being activated,  don't remember seeing any posts since.

Judging by several posts on this and other forums Directv has stopped activating HR24s even ones they send out as replacements. It might be just those accounts that have transitioned to ATT, not enough posts to know for sure.  Maria's post seems to echo the party line.

Never mind my personal distaste against their apparent direction away from HDDVRs, what is going on with current support? People who have HDDVRs cannot get a valid equivalent replacement. And those that get one sent are told they just wasted their time waiting for it because it cannot be used. I am very concerned on this issue.
