Gemini disappointment

Got the new dtv Gemini upgrade for free with extending my contract.  This replaced a genie mini 4k that was sent back when Gemini came in.

The Gemini is trash.  Turns off on its own ( yes energy save is turned off) and there is no rhyme or reason to when it happens.  Apps buffer and never had the issue prior.  Will randomly go into app mode on its own ( has happend a few times). The remote itself is flakey. Will control volume sometimes and other you can press volume multiple times with no response ( yes batteries are new).

It's has been unplugged and red button reset multiple times.

I started a chat with dtv to send Gemini back and get a genie mini back.  Was told no problem and was emailed a return label, but I had to call customer service to get the genie sent to me. Ok no problem.

This is where it gets infuriating!!!!!  After being transferred from dept to dept.  I'm told "will give you premiere protection plan for free". After questioning the guy he confesses " free for 3 months then an additional $13 a month.  No!!!   Then it was " we can send you a genie mini for $199). Absolutely not I'm returning defective equipment and your sending back what I had...  Countless back and forth then it " ok will send you one for free but with another additional 2yr contract". (Edited per community guidelines)!!!!   Then " how bout we meet halfway $100 and no contract?".  No!!!!!

I have been a dtv customer for over 20 years and never considered dropping there service but if this is how they run now it might be what I have to do...

I put the replacement ordeal to the side for now and ask them to fix or replace the Gemini l, and have a tech coming out Monday.  Not sure if it will do any good.

Anyone else having these issue or know how to simply get my genie mini back and return Gemini without them charging for the box or upping contract?????

So, previous installation was 2 separate runs of coax from the dish to 2 receivers, one a DVR. The second receiver was not a DVR but could access the recordings (I think it used MOCA through the coax).

New system was coax to Geni 2, then Gemini near by, and a Geni mini in my garage and it has the wireless video bridge.

I think they had the kit, as everything was boxed nice with lots of bar codes, extra cables, etc. but never having one, I could not tell you the contents of the kit obviously.

So now want to look at the mini in the garage and either hardwire to my network if possible...

The mini in the garage should be able to connect to the HS17 using the built in WVB unless it is out of range then you should be able to use the external WVB that is connected with a coax from the SWM splitter to get it closer to the mini in the garage.

@hmcm

The Genie2 Server has a built in wireless bridge which worked for Genie non 4K minis before Geminis.

You shouldn't need a wireless bridge if you have a Genie2.

Not entirely true.

First of all there are only two models of wireless Mini Genie Clients (C41W and C61W, designated by the 'W'). All other Mini Genie Clients are wired. There is no Mini Genie that is both wired and wireless at this time.

The WVB has a range of up to 80 feet under ideal conditions. Some might get an external WVB to use with the Genie-2 (HS17) to improve coverage. This helps with range and anything that might degrade the signal, especially if the HS17 is not in a good central location to begin with.

The Gemini has both the wired and wireless options, plus the built-in support for apps like a traditional streaming device, so has a bit more capability than a Mini Genie. Though I will always prefer a HDDVR over either a Mini Genie or Gemini for the dedicated tuners, recording space, and I don't have to share settings with everyone else in the home. (note: Genie-2 forbids HDDVRs so is restrictive in that sense).

I agree! The geminis are junk! Mine turn on randomly for no reason!

I posted a month ago when the system was just installed, the Mini in the garage has the wireless bridge attached, and is also connected to my wi-fi network. The Genie 2 is about 50 feet away, and hooking the Mini to my wi-fi seems to have solved the issues with just the wireless bridge, and that makes sense, the 50 foot through several walls was no good. The Gemini is connected to my home wi-fi, and so is the Genie 2. All that solved all my stuttering issues on video.

But the Gemini need improvement. At the moment the biggest issue is pausing video that is through an app.

When I am on Hulu, or Prime, if I leave it too long, I get the screensaver (yuck), but pressing play brings me back to my paused screen, and pressing again resumes. Ok, that works.

But Netflix does NOT respond to the play button after the "screensaver pause" ... the ONLY button the system seems to respond to is the home button.... then I have to navigate all the way back to the program I was watching on Netflix.

But wait! It's worse!! While "stuck" if you hit jump forward, etc. when you get "back" to your show, Netflix acts as though it did indeed get the commands, it is "forwarded".

So clearly, the Gemini just does not dump the screensaver and give you the video back which it clearly has.

Remember, only happens on Netflix, not Prime, not Hulu, etc. So it is NOT configuration or anything else I am doing.

poor programming, and I an very disappointed in the software quality in the Gemini. There are further issues, but this is the biggie so far. I've got to document this in my site, so people know it is NOT them, but the product.

We still lose our live channel stuff every hour after the unit is on. We thought it was a heartbeat within the network cuz it was always 7am, 8am (all the way through). But then when we start the unit at a different time, 716, 816? It still crashes. If we are on an app like Hulu, there is zero app interruption. Only live tv is ever disrupted.

Absolutely!!! I got a second Gemini replaced, still the same issues (randomly loses connection with the Genie 2). Tech came and replaced the Genie 2 tower....guess what same issue. This product is not ready for prime time and is embarrassing that a company of the size of ATT will release that to general public. When it works is perfect, but this random restart is infuriating.

We’re having the same issue. Random buffering or inability to connect even though the internet signal is strong. Have to reset in the middle of shows. Very frustrating.

DTV doesn't use your WiFi to connect wireless minis, it setup a separate WiFi network that no other devices can use.

I used to run a school network which old school had only a few channels. Two access points on the same channel could cause problems. Maybe changing the router's channel might help. Just food for thought.

I have two Geminis but both are connected by the regular DTV coax to network adapters the plug into the Geminis with a Cat5 patch cable. No problems with them.

How would instal Gemini wired with Genie 2? I am not sure how is this possible when the Genie2 has to have the coax plugged in.

I think "wired" means Ethernet wired to the Gemini as opposed to Wireless.

Actually mine was wired coax before the Gemini with two 4k Genie minis. The installer used the previous swim module. One line to each mini with one mini line split to a Genie2 (HS17).

I just disconnected the Genie Mini from the coax and connected the adapter to the coax like the " Gemini Wired Device Setup Guide" said.

The coax is connected to the SWM splitter then is run to the Gemini that needs a DECA BB to connect the coax to the Gemini using an Ethernet cable.
