How to keep multiple genie dvr from showing list of recordings as well as scheduled recordings

I read the forum on this question and someone said the genie dvrs are linked and needs needs to be a regular hd dvr that's not a client with the Genie dvr. Directv says they don't carry anything beside the Genie dvr main and the mini. I was told by the agent to ask the technician of setting the parental control, to anybody is this an option so I won't see other family members recording on my receiver?. Thanks

Parental controls do nothing to prevent recordings from the minis.   The minis can't be removed from the play list.  You can still lease HR24s stand alone DVRs from third party online retailers at the full lease price they charge provided you don't have an HS17 Genie2 that forbids all DVRs/non DVRs and only allows minis.

Hi There! Darn! I guess the agent was suggesting and didn't really know himself I guess I will have to ask the technician if they have anything non Genie laying around in his truck otherwise there is no solutions for the recording list being share with other Genie receivers. Thanks for the heads up!

Let's sort out some terminology. If you have an HS17 or an HR54, those are Genie DVRs or Genie servers (there's also an older Genie dvr the Hr44 but lets forget about that one) There are also Genie clients (often called "minis" which have model numbers like C41, C61, C61K etc). These are NOT DVRS because they don't have tuners or playlists, they take tuners from the Genie server and share one playlist which is on the Genie server Both the Hs17 and  the HR54 support 4K, the HR54 will support one 4k output and the HS17 will support  2 outputs, but the 4K TVs have to have a C61K mini connected between the Genie server and the  4K TV..

Oh, and just to complicate this further, the HR54 will actually connect directly to a TV for non-4K whereas the HS17 has no tv connection, all connections have to use minis.

Because the minis and the servers share resources, in particular a single playlist, you can't exclude any of them from accessing all the programs in the playlist, so there are no parental controls and you can't stop people using a mini from deleting programs in the playlist.

If you have an HR54, you can use regular DVRs instead of minis, and these DVRS have their own playlists and parental controls.

So far so good. Unfortunately Directv does not supply HR54s to new customers, only to people who already have  HR54 or  HR24s that need replacing. They won't replace minis with HR24s. And they won't replace HR17s with HR54s, So if you have an HS17 with minis, you are sort of stuck with the limitations.

Genie: HR34, HR44, HR54

Genie Lite: H44 (has optional DVR upgrade kit)

Genie-2: HS17

You can only have one on the account. There is no option to have multiple Genie DVRs. This is because it works as a server for all Clients.

Mini Genies (i.e. C31) are Clients/extensions of the main Genie. They cannot work by themselves. Think of it as multiple TVs using one box. As such you cannot hide them from each other.

The regular Genie line supports HDDVRs (HR20 thru HR24 and special R22). Being that they are dedicated receivers, you can hide one from the others if you don't want to share playlists. Unfortunately, it has become difficult to get one as even the HR24 stopped being made a few years ago as AT&T tried to push DirecTV to a all-in-one setup.

The Genie-2 is the one model that FORBIDS having anything but Clients. All TVs have full access to each other as they are all run by the same box. This is the simple company friendly option, but not customer flexible, that DirecTV was being forced towards.

@nickvince

You're welcome. Yes we are people, mostly other customers like yourself.

Others can jump into the discussion if they have related questions. But if you got all the answers you needed, great. But don't hesitate to post back if you think of something else. We help where we can.

I do hope the new co-owner of DirecTV innovates newer HDDVRs so that we can stay away from a Client only setup if we choose.
