Need to upgrade to HD receiver. Do I still keep the coaxial cable connected?

My household has had the SD receiver in each room for many years now. Months ago we lost a few channels that now require HD, and we've noticed that sometimes our receiver acts weird. We know it's because our receiver is very outdated.

So now we are going to upgrade to the HD receivers. My questions are: 1) Will we still be using the coaxial cable connected to our receiver, 2) Exactly how are the HD receivers connected, and 3) Does an install tech have to come connect it, or is it something we can do ourselves?

You will need a tech to install an HD dish and yes the tech will most likely use the existing coax.

Yes, MPEG-2/SD-only is on the way out. It is an HD world as of a several years ago. Legacy systems are no longer sustainable.

1. Tech will use any coax that is still in good condition and compatible.

2. Single Wire Multiswitch (SWM). Regardless if DVR or not, it is only one coax connection to each box instead of one per tuner.

3. Tech install required. Update to SWM, plus new receiving dish, and any other updates as needed.

What are the models of each box you have? Just to be sure how much needs replacing.

Also, when you call DirecTV just request a MPEG swap. Do NOT say "upgrade". This way you avoid a new 24 month service agreement as the swap is required for service to continue.
