Problems using Internet to install replacement receiver
This is going to be a long post.
I just received a replacement receiver and installed it. Here's a short description of the setup and the challenges encountered.
- When the box arrived it was easy enough to physically install
- I needed to call the help line instead of simply entering information over the internet, why this needed to be done is just the beginning of the challenges I have encountered
- The agent was nice and patient enough - but to be honest I had no need of her had some reasonable instructions been included in the box
- I had to tell the agent the card number and serial number of the device, this clearly would have been easier over text or internet chat
- I had to reboot the WVB (Why does this device even exist)
- I had to restart the main receiver twice
- I had to restart the "little box" three times
- Finally I managed to get connectivity between main receiver and "mini" receiver
Now on to rebuilding my playlist and recordings.
I took pictures of my entire series recording list so I would have it.
I tried using the Internet to search and record programs.
- The interface for finding shows is horrible
- The search area uses 4pt font and is practically impossible to find and read
- Many programs simply could not be found
- Several when I searched and clicked selected the wrong program
- When I finally did find a show I wanted to record, I could not tell it to just record new episodes
- Overall the web side of directv.com is an abomination to mankind albeit it still better than the iPhone application which makes me want to smash my phone every time I try to use it

The WVB is needed to connect the wireless clients to the system and is built in stating with the HS17 Genie2. DTV is a satellite service that doesn't need internet to work so places that don't have access to the internet can use it.

The wireless video bridge (WVB) is what connects wireless clients to the main Genie (HR34, HR44, HR54). Only the Genie-2 (HS17) has the WVB built-in (though can use additional external ones for more coverage). Hope that helps clarifies why it exists.
Sorry but over the phone customer support and techs still exist. The entire world has not been replaced by text or online chat, or other such robotic options.
