SD dishes will be obsolete when DTV finishes shutting down the MPEG2 channels.

DirecTV is in the process of shutting down their MPEG-2/SD-only feeds. As such any dish that is SD-only (such as 18" round) must be replaced.

@barth to answer your question, YES that can be received with an SD dish, but do replace that soon.

i have been told that ch. 801 has been "upgraded" to HD from SD. therefore, my SD receiver cannot pick it up. if i obtain an "HD" receiver--but keep my "SD" dish, will i be able to receive ch. 801?

Not true. Whether an HD or SD receiver, an SD dish will not be able to get HD. Also, I am not aware of Chanel 801 being changed to HD-only.  I’ll let you know later if it has changed.

EDIT: After a check, I can confirm that the channels like 801 are receivable with an SD dish. So yes, they are SD-compatible channels.

i was able to receive 801 last year. this year--it's gone. directv customer service has informed me that 801 has been moved/upgraded to HD only.

Music channels are not SD/HD but DTV may have moved them the the HD satellites so only the HD dishes can receive them.

MPEG-2/SD-only is what has been going away.

MPEG-4 is capable of both SD and HD.

So likely what has happened is that 801 though an SD-only channel, has been moved to the MPEG-4 feed. That means your receiving dish cannot get the channel anymore as it can only receive MPEG-2.
