Replacing Receiver
I'm replacing a D12-100 receiver. I don't want it to record or connect to the internet, I just need it to work.
My question is what is the difference between a Genie and a Genie Lite, which one would work for my purpose?
If it makes any difference I do have 3 other TVs connected to D12-100 receivers so any information would be appreciated.

You need to call DTV for their free MPEG2 swap offer, most likely they will try to set you up with an HS17 Genie2 DVR recorder with mini clients, all Genies but the H44 LITE are reorders.

the genie lite is not available any more. An H24 or H25 would be a suitable non-DVR to reeplace the D12 if that's the only receiver you have.
But since SD is going away you would also need a slimline HD dish. Directv should provide you with this.

Thanks y'all. One of my receivers is acting up (because it's older than dirt) so I called and ordered new receivers. He told me there's no charge because these should be replaced/won't be supported. I'm now waiting for a local tech to schedule an appointment.
The worst part is over, took 25 minutes with Customer Service.

DirecTV is shutting down their MPEG-2/SD-only feeds. All your D12s are required to be swapped. Not only is there no charge, but as long as it was processed as a swap and not an "upgrade", there is no 24 month service agreement. Check the order confirmation to be sure.
Genie is a 5 tuner HDDVR that acts as a server to manage clients. The Genie Lite (H44) is a non-DVR version that can update to DVR functionality with a DVR upgrade kit (DirecTV specific external hard drive). If you don't want to record, then you don't want a Genie. And I suggest against the old Genie Lite as was a "good idea" that didn't pan out as hoped. And stay away from the Genie-2 (HS17) because of built-in restrictions, in addition to it is a recording model.
The true equivalent for a non-DVR would be H24 or H25. However, DirecTV was going full steam ahead with Genie-only setups so may be difficult to get a non-DVR.
If your only choices are Genie (HR34, HR44, HR54), Genie-2 (HS17), or Genie Lite (H44) then go with the Lite as that is the only one where DVR is optional. But if possible get HD non-DVRs (H24 and H25 were the last ones). And be prepared that they will need to schedule a tech to do all the updates including a new receiving dish.
