return kit for old receiver
I have a 15 year old directv receiver. I was told it was useless and didn't need to return it by the tech who came to our house. I received a letter saying I do need to return it. I need a return kit to do that.

you need to drop it off with a participating fedex or ups store,(not all are participating) make sure you have your account number and get a tracking number ,they will pack and ship it at no charge to you below are links to find a participating center, if you are more than 10 miles from a participating center then call and inform them your more than ten miles from a participating location and they will send boxes and labels.
www.fedex.com/attreturns or www.theupsstore.com/locations.

@Constructive yes. If it is a LEASED receiver, you will need to return the receiver. If it is OWNED however, no need to return it. But, I am surprised that DTV wants a 15 year old receiver back. The HR20 and H20 were made in 2006, H10 in 2005 (H10 is technically obsolete because it was used when HD was on 110 and 119 and was only MPEG-2 Capable), and any receiver before that is considered obsolete because they are SD only receivers.

@Constructive yes I know, that's why I was presuming that she had an HR20 or below, which are old receivers that shouldn't regularly need to be returned.

It tells you in the letter how to return it. You only need a return kit if you don’t live close to a participating Fed Ex Print and Ship Center or a The UPS Store which if that is the case one will automatically be shipped to you. Just bring the equipment that it tells you in the letter to return along with your account number into one of those offices otherwise if you don’t have one of those offices near you then call DirecTV and ask for a recovery kit.

I went to the Fedex outlet at Sault Ste Marie and they won't do that. They said I need an address label and box and bar code. If you send me that, I will be able to drop the receiver at the post office, which is closer than the FedEx office, which is 30 miles away. Thank you.

1. This is a public forum of other customers. Per the rules NEVER post your full name and number, or other personal info, for your privacy and protection. For official support you call DirecTV. But experienced customers, and the occasional employee off the clock (shown by the "employee" tag), can many times provide guidance.
2. What is the model of that 15 year old box? Surprising it is returnable, but not impossible as might have been the first run off the assembly line for that model so still considered new enough.
3. The shipping location must be a main store, not a small shipping annex or the like. I would use their respective lookup tools to find a participating one.

Instead of throwing out possible model numbers, I would find out exactly what model OP has. That way we only provide the info is needed. Otherwise if we give instructions and status such as for HR20, H20, D10 thru HR44, HR54 and up, etc. we are just throwing info at the wall and seeing if anything sticks.

If you don’t live within 5-10 miles, depending on what billing system your account is in, of a participating store, a recovery kit will be automatically shipped to you, and you will receive it in 5-7 business days. How long has it been?

Very doubtful a 15 year old box is returnable. Most likely instructions didn't specify the exact box, only gave general instructions.
This would be cleared up if the OP would post the EXACT MODEL of the box.
(We are not going to guess between D10 and HR54 as that is not helpful).

Don’t listen to technicians or anyone except for the agent that deactivates/removes your receiver as they will be prompted to read disclosures about returning the equipment to you if in fact your equipment is recoverable, and always go by the letter. The list of recoverable equipment updates and a receiver that was recoverable before may no longer be recoverable and vise versa. If the letter says you need to return it then you need to return it. The only type of receiver you definitely don’t need to return is any SD receiver. So what’s the status of your recovery kit?

Yeah. I’m not at work so I don’t have access to the list of recoverable equipment right now. Do you have access to it? No you don’t. Also, there was one instance where the model number for the customer’s HD receiver was not even on the list and was told by a previous agent that she didn’t need to return it and then when she called back to cancel and I processed the disconnect order the system was prompting for the receiver to be returned.
