Someone else suggested it might be the cooling fan. I have put it on energy saver. The receiver is in a cabinet that is open on the back but has glass on the front. I'm going to start leaving the glass door open to see if that makes a difference. Thank You very much for your quick response.

Make sure to clear of surrounding dust, including the vents on the box.
Do not stack it with other devices.
Keep out of direct sunlight.
What model is the box?
Hopefully the above suggestions will return it back to normal operating. But if it continues, then I would prepare for a warranty replacement in the foreseeable future. If a DVR model, catch up on recordings first as they do not transfer.

The only moving parts I know of that could produce a whining noise is the hard drive or cooling fan.

AFAIK only the HR44 and newer models have a fan that comes on when needed, older models run 24/7.

Definitely move it into a more open space.
