Upgrading from hd rcvrs to genie rcvrs
Upgrading from hd h-24 DVR and 2 receivers, with a single coax slimline swm lnb enabled dish. Connected thru a splitter and external power inserter.
To a genie hr 54 dvr and 2 wired mini genies.
Thinking of making this a diy project, do I just switch the hd boxes with the genie boxes? And remove the external power inserter, knowing that the hr54 has his own internal power inserter??
Other than going thru the final setup/activation of the boxes, should this be all I need in order to get the system operational??
Do I need any other extra components to hook all of the system successfully...??

Replacing H25 with Genie and keeping all 3 of your HDDVRs (HR24) is the best way to go for your 4 TVs.
Genie: 5 tuners and 1TB recording space.
Mini Genie Client: No tuners or recording space. Takes that from the Genie.
HDDVR: 2 tuners and 500GB recording space (320GB if HR21 or earlier).
HD non-DVR: 1 tuner, no recording space, but has Autotune.
Right now from 3 HDDVRs and 1 HD non-DVR, you have 7 tuners and 1.5GB space.
Genie and 3 Mini Genie Clients would be 5 tuners and 1TB recording space. So that is the downgrade I mentioned (plus boxes cannot work independently).
Genie and 3 HDDVRs is 11 tuners and 2.5GB space. Most bang for your buck.

Careful, sounds like you are doing a downgrade. Mini Genie Clients have no tuners or recording space of their own. The Genie (HR34, HR44, HR54) works with regular HDDVRs and HD non-DVRs so you have more tuners and recording space to go around.
What are the models of your other 2 receivers? At the very least do NOT replace the HR24 as will compliment the Genie.

DTV will not allow you to self install an upgrade, there is a 50/50 chance on an HR44 or HR54 being sent. If you have to self install you have to lease the HR54 and minis from an online dealer with the full up front lease fee but when DTV switched to their RC1 account system there where posts here that there where problems with activating them unknown if this has been fixed.
Doesn't matter you can continue to use the external power inserter or the one built in you just have to make sure it is connected to the red power pass through port on the SWM splitter.

You first said you have a HR24 and 2 other receivers (3 TVs). Now you say you have 3 additional receivers which are two HR24s and one H25, which being additional adding the original receiver (HR24) is 4 TVs.
Whether 3 TVs or 4, a Genie with Clients would be a downgrade to your existing setup either way. All you should do is replace the H25 with a Genie. That way you keep all the perks of your dedicated HDDVRs and make it so the last TV has recording capability as well. Never replace a HDDVR with a Mini Genie Client as that is straight up a downgrade.
You should already have $10 HD and $10 DVR service. A Genie upgrade would add $3 Whole Home DVR (assuming you don't already have it) so that recordings from any box are viewable on the others.

my bad....let me explain again..
one HR24-100 (family room, gets most of the TV viewing done during the day)
one h25-100 (bedroom, gets some TV viewing done during late nights)
two HR24-700 (2 other bedrooms, hardly use at all)
total of 4 TV's...
Very good points, I didnt think about the availability of channels and recordings at the time. I will keep the genie and send the 2 mini genies/one of the rcvrs back.

Last question,
Should I use the genie dvr in my family room, my logic been that is the tv with more use (more storage for recordings) and closer to my router (for internet connection while using the directv app functions)...???
Thanks everybody for your input..

Since the Genie is the most capable of all your DVRs (5 tuners and 1TB vs 2 tuners and 500GB), family room or other high use TV is the best place.
The Genie will serve as the internet connection for On Demand, for all your boxes. Wired is preferred, but it still can connect by WiFi to your router. If you are using a wireless CCK then you will need to make sure it is disconnected when you get the Genie or it will cause conflict with the Genie's built-in one. As a note the old external CCK only supports 2.4Ghz, but the built-in one supports the 5Ghz band as well if your router supports it.
