very specific issues with RC73 remote programming

OK, I have a really specific question, so please read this simple, yet complex problem

I have a Geni Mini in my garage, it serves up several TV's in different rooms, none in the garage.

I will be using several remotes all RC73.

First issue: the furthest TV is running RF. I see that unlike dumb remotes, these are "paired" in RF mode (so I assume only one remote can be paired).  Reception is spotty, so sometimes you need to move around a bit and try a couple times to change channels etc.

The question is: is the TV on/off emitted by IR from the remote (once programmed), or is the Geni mini involved? Right now having issues trying to complete the "programming", and really would like the good old fashioned "enter code" on the remote by itself.

So another path is a way to program the RC73 standalone for the TV, but all the stuff for the older remotes does not seem to work.

There are many reasons why I cannot change to IR for this situation, nor get better RF reception (spent yesterday moving the Genie mini around)

Greg, we are glad to have the opportunity to assist you on creating your perfect set-up!

Going straight to the point here, the On/Off function on the TV is emitted by IR. Please note that in RF mode, this remote only works with the Genie Mini, however, when in RF mode, it still uses IR for TV/AV functions.

Either way, I do want to let you know that this function is not available for all TVs, this kind of programming is possible for only a specific list of compatible devices so, to make sure yours is compatible, please check your private messages.

Minis don't serve multiple TVs in other rooms That is done by the Genie, minis are remote controls of it and can't function without it.

RC7X remotes use both IR and RF simultaneously IR for the TV and any other IR only devices like a sound bar and RF for the Mini or Genie.

Shannon, you might have not read this in my post: (here it is again)

"I have a Geni Mini in my garage, it serves up several TV's in different rooms, none in the garage."

So indeed, my Mini does serve multiple TV's, thus why I asked about the RC73. This way I use the garage Mini to serve whatever room I am in, I'm not buying 6 more Minis!!!

So far I'm using a couple of RC73s in IR mode (with wireless extender/repeaters) from a couple of rooms, but have one still in RF mode (since it must be paired you only can have one in RF mode)

So I'll see if I can program the darn thing for the TV of choice... otherwise it will be getting a universal remote with IR and a wireless extender.

There are only 2 people in this house, no reason to have 6 clients, and not all rooms have TV's, some are computers.

So no answers here... will experiment more, but it would be nice to be able to program the remote without in RF mode talking to the Mini.

Well, another questions to see if there are any experts out there... what is the procedure to switch the RC73 BACK to IR after it is already in RF?

It uses both at the same time and can't do just IR.

Sorry, wrong, in RF mode, it does not do IR (only power on and off) from actual testing.

You do realize and remember there is the mode to set IR or RF right?

So, I want the "IR" mode setting, maybe it's only done via the connection via the box...

BUT! There is a key sequence to put it into RF mode, it's in the user guide, etc.

So I'm looking for the key sequence (if it exists) to go back to IR mode...

I gather that I am beginning to waste my time here on this one... if you don't know, or understand what I am asking, that's ok...  I'll figure it out myself... but just stating stuff other than what I am asking is not helpful...

So what is turning the IR TV on and off if not the IR mode of the RC73?

What model is that "Mini Genie"? And how do you have it connecting to 6 different TVs?

Want to help with your remote and IR concerns, but what you describe is very confusing. Mini Genies like receivers were built to connect to one TV each. And doing some after market splitting to 6 seems quite the endeavor.

Other than using the IR/RF setup option in the menu, I would have to do some more checking for a option to set to IR only.

DirecTV was built to have one box per TV and you pay per authorized TV as such. So more info can be helpful when there is a more unique and custom setup like yours.

And yes shannon02 read what you originally posted. What you described was so unusual I think they simply assumed that you must have misunderstood what exactly the box was because they weren't designed to work as you've jury rigged.

And why is it in the garage?

Sorry guys, I did explain earlier. I guess it is too complicated.

If you REALLY want to understand and help, then you can go to my site, where it is in more detail.

Anyway, as I said, looks like I have exhausted this specific knowledge here, and I'll figure it out myself. Looks like I may have to write the definitive piece on this remote myself also.

Here is the link to my page on my site, and you will see the system described in detail.

https://elmassian.com/index.php/electronics-aamp-gadgets/directv-tips-discoveries

Thanks anyway, I really do appreciate all the help I've gotten so far, it just seems that I've stated the problem well enough and now people are sniping, and as I stated, just wanted an answer to a specific question, not to review the entire system (and that review is indeed on my web site).

There was no sniping. Sorry our responses were too broad. I would suggest to expect more info and questions when you post in a public space and mention a very special setup that is well outside the reason of intended design.

Hope you find the answer. And whether the answer ends up being what you want or not, please share so that others might be helped as well.

Will be shared, but since my attempt at narrowing the focus failed, the results will be on my site, not here, especially since I was chastised for my situation being "too special", clearly that same logic applies to posting any results to my "too special", i.e unacceptable.

Greg

(sniping: asking "why in the garage" when my question was a specific programming issue on a specific remote)

Let it alone guys, we are wasting bandwidth, I won't respond any more.

You can pair as many remotes as you want in RF mode. You can have multiple remotes paired to the Genie mini but programmed for different TVs.

GREAT, some helpful information! THANKS! I will give it a try.

I can try and if it works, I can eliminate some of the IR repeaters.

You don't have to go into the menu to pair the remote. With the remote in front of the Genie mini just press and hold the mute and enter buttons for a few seconds until the light blinks a few times. It should pop up on the screen that the remote is now set to rf. You can then go into the menu and program it for a specific TV, or you can also manually enter a code. There is a little bit of a trick to entering a code on the rc73 remotes. You need to enter the first digit and then pause briefly before entering the remaining four digits. Many of the codes are different than they were on the old white remote.
