Adding a wired uverse box

I want to add a cable box to another room. I have already tested the outlet and it has perfect signal. Can I buy a cable box on ebay? I called att and besides the 50$ new box fee they want to charge 150$ for a technician to test the port or review the wiring (not needed). I don't like the wireless receiver due to personal preference. Any advice?

All Uverse equipment is owned and leased by AT&T.  Anything bought on Ebay is stolen and may or may not be usable.

Is there a reason you don't want to use it as a wireless box?  If you wanted to go wireless, one can be sent for a self-install and I believe it's a one time fee of $49 plus the monthly lease fee.  I have 2 wireless boxes with no problems.

But yes, if you want a wired box, it requires a tech visit at $150.

ETA:  A wired receiver is connected to the gateway(modem), not an outlet.

I just don't like to overload my wi-fi and the wireless boxes i have seen at friends' houses are way slower and very often freeze. Therefore, I want to remain old-school wired. I think it is an abuse from at&t that a technician must come to my place at a 150$ expense, the only thing that it may achieve with that behavior is attrition to other carriers or follow the trend of cutting cable service. If doesn't work then i will ask for help from a technician not the other way around. the gateway at home has the TV outlet connected to the wired network from my home, therefore the signal is distributed through every outlet in the house.

I’m curious as to how you tested the Jack. For perfect signal

Very simple. I disconnected a box from another room, and connected in the one I want to have the additional box. It worked perfect. Therefore, it has signal.... Any advice if the same model of box (motorola 1200) purchased on ebay will work with no problem? Why at&t refuses (and does not allow CSR) to send the wired box without the visit of a technician?

WHAT did you connect the receiver to?  There were already wires running to the gateway?

Here's the problem with a stolen box:  DVRs and receivers are "provisioned" to a specific account.  If you acquire a stolen box from Ebay, the question is whether or not AT&T will provision it.  It's a gamble.

The additional uverse boxes are connected to the power outlet (obvious) and to a coaxial cable in the wall. As mentioned before, the gateway is connected to the entry point of my home TV network, which distributes the signal to every coax outlet through the house. Any available solution  that does not involve a 150$ tech's visit?

So when you called, they wouldn't allow you to order a 1200 for a self install?

@Constructive Is that the problem?  You can order a 'replacement' for a 1200 but not an extra (new) box without a tech visit?

i love talking to smart resourceful people!!!

No 1200 self-install option, just with a tech. Nobody offered me the replacement option. Should i request replacement, will the alleged "to be replaced" box be de-activated?

Back when I was an installer the wireless boxes also had an Ethernet port. I’m not sure if this is the same now but it wouldn’t hurt to have someone look at a wireless box to see if there’s an Ethernet or coax on the wireless boxes
