$6 increase in monthly service.

Why should I consider staying with a service that has an annual outage, lasting for weeks, with program providers yet continues to charge the customer the same price and has the audacity to ask for even more money. An 8% increase is ridiculous. Know that I will be leave Direct TV after 18 years as soon as I find a more consistent program provider at a more reasonable price. I can only hope that many more leave also.

All TV providers have to raise their rates so long as those content providers continue to ask for more money.

It is a repeating issue, but is not a annual outage. Carriage agreement comes up and some channels decide to withhold their feed to raise costs. It is not the same network owner every years as there are many.

The price adjustment has to factor in agreements made to date. So when those network owners raise their costs to the TV provider, in turn our bills have to go up as well. Simple economics as must as we (the consumer) dislike it.

There is no TV provider that is immune from this situation as the others have been through it many times as well. So staying or switching will not make you immune or any of the others you "hope" go through it as well.

Better then a $10 increase that they did the past few years.

My concern is the timing changes. This has historically been taking effect in January for the annual adjustment. The last one was in November, a couple months early that I hoped would be a one-off. This one is now in October.

I can accept this if they are just smoothing out to the best time of year for the adjustments to take place and will return to being consistent. However if each year it is at rather different times, that is rough to follow.

@Juniper

It's still better than many cable providers which do "$1.75 here, $4.32 there" throughout the year.

Agreed. Just don't want DirecTV to end up going that direction. Consistency and transparency for the most part has been their strong suits compared to many others.

What I don't like about directv  is that I have one box,a genie, I pay a $10 monthly fee, then I pay an additional fee for the same box of $10 to record and then I pay a $3 a month fee for whole home DVR recording even though I only have the one box. This is a total of $23 a month rent for the one box, nearly 33% of my total monthly bill.

Then you should go with DirecTV streaming services. Either DirecTV Via Internet (those that want satellite-like without the dish) or DirecTV Stream (traditional streaming like YouTube TV, Hulu TV, or Sling TV).

So why did you sign up for DTV?  Those fees are spelled out in the beginning.

There is no rental fee. DirecTV has never rented their boxes. Any 'lease' cost is one-time up front, but most people usually only get a box when the upgrade is free. There is no difference in cost from someone who purchased to own their boxes, back when that was an option (Genies never had an owned option, and all other owned options went away shortly after launch).

Your receiver services are for the account, no matter how many boxes use them. Have at least one HD box, you pay for HD service. Have a DVR, pay for DVR service. Since the Genie is DirecTV's Advanced Whole Home HDDVR than you pay for Whole Home DVR as well as it what the box is built for. If you had a regular HDDVR such as a HR24, than you would have HD and DVR service, but not Whole Home DVR.

You pay $7 for each additional TV beyond the first, no matter what kind of box it has (or even no box at all if it is an RVU Client TV/DirecTV Ready). So those receiver services are not per TV, like it has been for some other providers. At multiple TVs that has made DirecTV the cheaper service in comparison many times.

Hope that helps you understand your bill a bit better.

What I was saying is that One of the things I don't like is That I am paying $3 a month for whole home DVR, I only have one (1) receiver so I have no use for "whole home DVR". I "rent" the box for a  monthly fee. I will never own the receiver. A lease is for a specific time and since I have to pay the "lease" as long as I have the genie receiver, whether it is one, two or 25 years. Directv started in 1994 , I joined them in 1995.  So, I have been around to see all of the changes, the worst being when AT&T purchased them. Thanks for the input

I forgot to ask, if I return my genie and get a HD box and a DVR box I would only pay $10 each for a $20 total and not have to pay the $3 "whole home dvr" fee?

There is no lease or rental fees. the up front lease fee is only applied if you don't have a free upgrade.  Right you are leasing the receiver until you decide to cancel.
