ESPN 3D (Channel 106) Issues
Hello
I've been digging through the forums about this, and noticed that there are folks, especially the owners of Vizio and Mitsubishi TV's explaining that there are having difficulty using the 3D feature. I'm also having difficulty with this. Here's my situation:
Tune to 106, TV switches to 3D, and the a message displays from the DTV Receiver saying:
Error 797, This TV does not support 720p. I also get, your TV does not support the content protection for this programming.
I do know what the latter error means, because it occurs when a program is trying to send HDCP signal through your HDMI cable to the component hooked up to it. Now here's my setup:
HR-24/200
Samsung PN58C8000 58" 3DTV
Pioneer Elite VX-32 3D Receiver
Standard HDMI 1.4 Cables (Remember folks, it's a digital signal, doesn't matter the cable).
As I was saying before the HDCP message comes on when I have video conversion set to on, with my receiver. I don't have 3D issues with any other channel except ESPN3D. My speculation is that the NBA or ESPN sends a specific type of HDCP signal that either the DTV receiver is having issues with or my TV. I know it isn't my receiver because I have pass-through capabilities also (most receivers are default pass-through, and the high-end receivers can do either).
I also notice that when I set the DTV and A/V Receiver to display 720p only, it seems to override those options and always display 1080i. Another forum explained that tuning to certain channels before tuning to 106 is a workaround. I'll continue to try to figure out, and if someone has some suggestions I can certainly try them out.
Thanks,
-Moose

I purchased a brand new Samsung PN51D8000 and i have a HR21 Directv receiver. When i watch the 3net channel it works perfect but when i try to watch ESPN3D it gives me a messaged that says "Your TV does not support 720P". This makes no sense at all, its a brand new top of the line Samsung 3D Plasma TV. Can anyone explain why i might be running into this issue? I called Directv and asked them but they have no clue, i know more then any of there phone tech's. I used to work for Magnolia and Tweeter for ten years, so its very frustrating when i look for answers and the people i have to talk to are reading from a script on there computer screen. And i sooo sick of listening them tell me that i need to restart my receiver. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!

You realize that all you had to do was read this forum's archives? It's frustrating to write the same thing over and over. However, I will...
Basically DirecTV uses a non-standard or optional 3D format called 720p Side-by-Side for ESPN 3D. The standard for 720p is 720p Top-and-Bottom. The 720p SbS format is officially labeled as "optional". This means TV manufacturers do not have to support it with their sets. It is up to the broadcasters (or providers) to provide a means of converting the optional format to a mandatory format. 1080i Side-by-Side is mandatory and your set supports 1080i Side-by-Side. If the HR21 could convert 720p Side-by-Side to 1080i Side-by-Side, there would be no real issue. But DirecTV has disabled that function (the last time I checked) for 3D.
However, there is a workaround as Greywolf pointed out in your other thread on this subject. It ain't pretty, but it works.

Feel from to complain to DirecTV at: http://support.directv.com/app/ask
Let us know how that works out for you. Hopefully better than it did for the rest of us. You could also complain to Samsung, but they are well within their rights to leave out 720p Side-by-Side and still call the set fully 3D compatible since all the mandatory 3D formats are supported.
By the way, 3Net and (most of the time) N3D are sent to you in 1080i Side-by-Side which is a mandatory format (as mentioned above) and therefore works on your set. Also ESPN send both 720p SbS and 720p TaB to DirecTV. DirecTV then chooses the 720p SbS format to send to us.
Finally, when ESPN 3D is not being sent out, DirecTV places its 3D logo on the channel. Just to confuse you more, that logo is in 1080i Side-by-Side. So the only time channel 106 will not work is when there is an actual game/match going on, but will work when the logo is shown.

I am having the same Issues. I do not want to bypass my receiver (Pioneer vsx1120k). Directv needs to fix this problem. I switched to directv for the ESPN3D programming. What a disappointment. First no NFL RedZone and now this. How soon before Dishnetwork offers 3D programming?

If you are having the issue above then bypassing or not bypassing your receiver shouldn't make any difference. The issue above is purely for not being able to receive ESPN 3D which is 720p Side-by-Side. Your receiver doesn't care about side-by-side or top-and-bottom.
Since the Pioneer VSX1120k is 3D compatible then all 3D channels either work or they don't. If they don't it is likely a Pioneer EDID handling issue (as much as I would like to blame DirecTV). Make sure you have the latest firmware from Pioneer.
But, if you really are able to watch all 3D channels (103,104, 106 and 107) without the receiver but with the receiver you're only able to see all 3D except ESPN 3D (channel 106), then this would be a new issue. If the only 3D channel that you can't see with the Pioneer is 106 but can see all 3D channels without the Pioneer, then you should open a new thread.
