You can’t schedule updates. Not sure what updates you are talking about, software updates are delivered via satellite, not internet. The only updates you get over the Internet are updates to on demand.

Ok thanks. A direct tv employee told me my internet was maxed out due to high use updates of my internet connected to our direct tv. I have “ free” internet from 2am- 7am” and wanted to schedule these updates at that time. Once I disconnected my direct tv from the internet I no longer have issues running out of internet monthly, but of course I can’t stream or use some other functions unless I turn internet back on.

Interesting about your “on Demand” comment. So as long as I don’t use On Demand, my internet would be fine? I’m traveling shortly and in order to use my other devices for Direct TV I have to leave the internet connected. Thanks

DirecTV (not Direct TV) updates are automatically through the satellite. There is no way to schedule when they occur. Normally they go through in the middle of the night when supposedly there is the least people using the service. And of course it will pop up a message if needs to restart of the update giving you the option to do so later if you happen to be watching at that time.
Having your boxes connected to internet gives you access to On Demand. When you first connect there is a lot of usage for the initial download. But there is background usage to keep On Demand info current. Because of this it is highly suggested to avoid being connected to an internet service that has a limit as there is high risk of eating through your data allowance.

It’s not just a matter of not using on demand. Even if you never use it, as long as your receiver is connected to the internet, there will be usage to keep on demand information updated as noted above. However, if you don’t intend to use on demand or purchase pay per view with your remote, no need to connect your receiverto the internet.

If you have satellite internet then absolutely go into your DirecTV menu > Settings > Internet > Advanced and reset the network defaults. If you use a wired connection to your router, unplug that as well. DirecTV will use too much satellite internet data.
