You plug a regular over-the-air (OTA) antenna to your TV (provided it has an OTA tuner as a few might not). Then you get whatever locals are within range, including any channels you wouldn't get otherwise (such as sub-channels).
Other than that, be patient. DirecTV and the local affiliate (Tegna) are negotiating the next carriage agreement. Tegna will return their channels once they agree to a new carriage deal.
Houston's CBS station, KHOU has been pulled by TEGNA over - you guessed it, money! The customer is being held hostage by both TEGNA and DirecTV. We should get a rebate/reduction in our bill for as long as this continues. DirecTV's suggestion is to install an antenna. If I wanted to do that I wouldn't need them. Which I don't.
Surprisingly there are people out there who thought that years ago locals were shut off when in fact it was the just the signal being converted. So a regular antenna can be a backup or pick up additional channels for some.
You are not entitled to reduction in your bill. Terms of Service state that channels/programming/services can change at any time. Primarily this is because they don't own the channels, so cannot force Tegna or anyone else to keep the feed on.
So regular antenna and Locast are possible options as an alternative. Otherwise just be patient and watch something else. Certainly you didn't go to pay TV for a single channel.
We have also lost our local CBS affiliate with TEGNA. This is unacceptable. Direct TV needs to come to an agreement with them. What are we paying them for??? Luckily we have CBS all access, and can watch the shows, but losing our favorite local news.
You are paying for TV from satellite with a variety of channels, but not any specific channel guaranteed. Just like other TV providers what is available can change at any time. It is unfortunate that in recent years it is becoming more common for local affiliates to pull the feed (which is their right) as part of the negotiations.
My household is disappointed as TEGNA affects us. But plenty of variety of other channels to enjoy.

Connect an OTA antenna to your TV's OTA tuner.
