HBO Max is a streaming service so no you don't watch it through DTV but through a streaming device or the TV app. DTV does have a free preview period for signing up through them.
If you service includes HBO, then you have access to HBO Max. However the Max is not thorough DirecTV equipment as it is their streaming-only option. You would need to download the HBO Max app onto a streaming device, or go through your computer, and select DirecTV as your TV provider in order to use it.

Does your premium package include HBO? If you get HBO, you also get HBOMax.
