issues with the CW
As a sat user it seems directv will never put the CW in HD? With SD going away someday wouldnt they have to do this at some point?
Now On the flip side I can login to the Directv Stream and watch it, except its not available on the stream version even though its a sinclair station which i was told should be available?

Unfortunately that info is outdated. The Stelar Act is no more so it is no longer obligated.
Also, that only applied to the channel to begin with, not whether it was SD or HD. So if DirecTV has the channel but in SD-only than you would not have qualified for the national feed. HD itself wasn't required.
So until a change is made (if ever) than SD is all you get for that channel.

so if Directv has a deal to show an HD signal with the channel but they choose not to there is nothing anyone can do.

Can you receive your local CW station using an off-air antenna to get their HiDef signal?

no, there is no OTA for any channels in our area any more since once they went to digital all the signals no longer travel far enough to get them the 30 miles from the towers. it worked for Digital 1.0 but not 2.0 and beyond.

If DirecTV had a deal to provide your local affiliate of CW specifically in HD then they would. As they are only providing it in SD that means their agreement with Sinclair does not require it to be the HD version.
Correct there is nothing you can do regarding the DirecTV feed. There is no law that entitles you to HD on any specific channel. Most channels are available in both SD and HD version on DirecTV, with a few that are SD-only or HD-only. Unfortunately your local affiliate of CW is only carried in SD. That is how it stays until (if ever) DirecTV gets a new agreement with Sinclair to provide the HD feed.
If for some reason you cannot live without CW in HD, and the free OTA broadcast is not an option, then you would need to look into another provider that does have your affiliate station in HD.

If DirecTV is downgrading the feed, then that 'should' mean that though the HD is provided, the carriage agreement doesn't require that DirecTV pass it on in HD to the viewer. That certainly at first glance seems weird, so wonder what the exact reason would be for DirecTV choosing to do so in that situation.
Still not violating any law, but as long as it follows the terms of the agreement between DirecTV and Sinclair then it is fine. But if they are downgrading (as allowed per the agreement), we all would like to know "why".
