New Format HDUI

I have been a loyal happy Directv customer for eleven years until I turned on the Tv with the new format. The new format is horrible. The contrast and definition is clearly inferior. I have the updated format on my Panasonic Plasma which has had an impeccable picture and contrast and definition until the format has changed. Now the picture is dark, the definition is terrible. When I pause the picture and hit the info button on the remote control, the picture color, contrast and definition change to that of the superior picture quality of the old format. It becomes a different color and the definition is enhance to that of the old format.

Tx  for the advice will try to tweak it out on cinema mode.  Only problem is the picture improves when the info banner is displayed.  The contrast and definition is degraded when the info banner is not displayed.  Can the circuitry be compensating with the new HDUI format even though the info banner isn't displayed.

All I know is the pictures you posted looked exactly like the issue I described. Just try putting it on Cinema and see if that eliminates the change in the overall image when the info banner is displayed vs. not.

One thing you might notice is that the default Cinema mode makes the picture look kind of "smoky". The best way to combat this is by finding the "black level" setting and making it the darkest available. Then adjust brightness and contrast as needed.

Cinema will actually give you the most realistic picture. The other modes make colors more vibrant, but in a phony way. For example, if you're watching a football game on the default "Sports" mode, the field takes on a bright - almost fluorescent-looking - green color. It looks pretty, but that's not the way the field actually looks in real life. Also, the stupid phosphor protecting feature in the other modes besides Cinema constantly adjusts the lighting and contrast so it really messes with color clarity anyway.

Good luck.

Alright, well I'm sorry then. I guess you have a much older or newer model than mine then. I have several friends and family members that have Panasonic plasmas, and hey all have a Cinema mode. Not sure where you can go from here then...

Customer service says there is nothing they can do and the supervisor i spoke to said they cannot and will not sent out a technician to diagnose they problem unless we pay for it. They will not offer a discount for the inferior product they are putting out, only that they will escalate the complaint to a supposed higher up technician. I love how they advertise # 1 in customer service, who rates this, Directv themselves? An absolute joke of customer service. . Terrible, terrible customer service and we are paying top dollar for an inferior service and product. Shame on you Directv.

Picture of pixelation at top of non-hd channels.

That's not "pixelation" ... it's the "vertical blanking interval" of the SD channel.  It's generally not visible if your TV's overscan is set properly.  I don't think it has anything to do with the new HD user interface.  I still see this on some SD channels with my Panasonic Plasma TV.  Pressing the DirecTV Receiver's FORMAT button to change the video size can help.

Best to start your own new thread using the "Create New Post" button on the main forum page.  Your problem may very well be different from the original poster's.    With a new thread you can provide more information about your equipment, location, and troubleshooting you've tried so far.  And this forum software makes it difficult to track or respond to folks that add onto someone else's thread.

They are not going to change. It seems most people much prefer the new guide to the old one. In fact, if you look in the forums you'll find many posts from new HR34 owners complaining they still have the old guide, and wanting to know how long they will have to wait for the new one (which they have on all their other receivers).
