security code
i just purchased the cinema kit that is suppose to be a 5 minute setup. we have the hr22..after trying to put our security code in and it not accepting it because our remote has no way of putting lowercase letters in ( no, we dont not have a # key on our remote that is suppose to change to lower and no pressing the number over and over goes thru the uppercase and the number, not lowercase) ..after nothing working we went into the router and changed the security code to all numbers and uppercase letters. ( very annoying since we have MANY wireless electronics using that wireless code that we had to go change)..guess what? it still will not accept the security key..why is it you read this forum and everyone is having the same issue?? dont belittle me and tell me this is an easy 5 minute setup because from what i have read no one has an easy setup. why will it not work? we have reset the box several times. it recoginizes our network but continues to say the security code is wrong. we can see the code on the screen as it is inputed in and yes the numbers and letters are correct.

the ssid name has an _ in the middle of the name..could that be an issue? it recoginizes the network name just not the code..and the firewall on the router is enabled...

yes you need to remove the underscore. remove the fire wall during the set up process.
the posted model number is your modem. Does it has built tin WiFi, or are you suing a separate wireless router?

no that doesnt set up YOUR directv cinema..why would this help me? my modem/wireless router works just fine. we have numerous electronics that are wireless and run through this box with no problem. i called tech support who ran me through everything i have done already and finally determined something is wrong with YOUR box and are sending a techinician out.

is not my box, more like it is yours. those settings explain how to enable DHCP on your particular modem.

.... determined something is wrong with YOUR box and are sending a techinician out.
Let us know what the tech finds.

Suzy, Believe me, no one here has any desire to belittle you or anyone else. However, when everything lines up configuring the Cinema Connection Kit is indeed a 5 minute job, or even less. Of course, when things don't line up, the job becomes endless. As to the case of the letters. On my router, the network name and password are all lower case and I simply enter them into the Kit with the remote and don't worry about the case and the router accepts them.
Are you quite sure that when you removed the underscore from the network name if was saved by the router? Here is a quickie try you can do if you like. Disconnect the kit from the DVR but leave the AC power connected. Use a ball point and reset the Kit thru the small hole in the back (hold it in for 30 seconds.) Then, on the DVR do thus: Menu -> .....setup -> system setup -> network setup -> restore defaults. At this point stop and go to your router and disconnect AC power for a minute and plug it back in. When all the lights settle down, go back to the DVR and connect the kit and await the invite to connect to your network.

I was in your shoes and just 3 hours ago I finally got an internet connection. I've been playing with this problem for weeks. I did everything everybody said and nothing!!! Today a decided to try again before I had someone come out. Did all the resets and everything and nothing until........I looked at the back of the Cinema Box and next to the reset button is a switch with AP / STA. Mine was on STA. I slid it over to AP and ran the test....and IT WORKED!!!!! Thought I should share this. Hope it helps you. Hey also you cant have a 0 in you security code.

jb thanks..but they did send a tech out because we did everything that tech support could think of..they had me do everything. except one easy thing..when the tech got here he asked to see what our security key was.. he had me change it to all numbers..no letters at all in the key..bingo worked in seconds...he said it almost always works. we spent hrs on this thing and on the phone with tech support who said there had to be something wrong with the unit because everything was setup like it should be...i cant believe something as simple as taking the letters out of the key worked. as for removing the underscore from the ssid the tech guy that came here said he never heard of that before.

I had the same problem. The system finally accepted my network security code when I renamed my wireless network to something without a special character. (Originally the network name contained an apostrophe.) Annoying that I had to do this because now I have to reconnect all of my pcs, laptops, iphones, ipads, kindles, game consoles, smart tv, media boxes, etc.. Note that none of these other devices had the slightest trouble with the network name, only the Directv Cinema Connection Kit. Nice work, Directv.
PS: I called Directv tech support before finally figuring this out for myself. The nice lady who originally answered tried upselling me a CenturyLink combo, a new modem, and several programming packages. When she finally transferred me to tech support I explained my problem and asked him what he thought the cause or solution was. His response: "I don't have a clue."

Nice work, Directv.
The Directv remote has no facilities to enter any special punctuation unlike a computer with a keyboard.
