What happened to caller ID coming up on the tv screen?

Caller ID on TV is only available on old models up through the 1st generation Genie (HR34). The 2nd generation Genie (HR44) and newer models have the updated software that removes the menu option for the feature.

It was an outdated feature just left to run as-is in the old software. It is not compatible with VOIP type phones, only plain old telephone systems (POTS). More people use VOIP or Cell phone as their primary (if not their only) phone. Since everything else that supported DirecTV through the phone line is fully through the satellite (software updates) or internet connected (PPV orders, anonymous viewing data, On Demand), there was no longer a good reason to keep the feature. They will not spend money and resources on something that doesn't support DirecTV at all. So not only does the new software remove it, but boxes (starting with 3rd gen Genie HR54) aren't made with a phone jack anymore.

Is there a separate screen that can be Hooke to the phone line to receive caller ID?

You can get a Caller ID Display box or another phone with Caller ID display built-in.
