Why are we being held hostage for a satellite service w/ our local tv news stations?

Yet again, after a long workday, I'm having to write a letter of protest as we are being told that unless DirecTV and our KCCI-Channel 8 newstation in Des Moines IA don't play nice in the conference room in NYC then we don't get to have the service of DirecTV. Not fair, not ok. I just paid my bill. I did my part not for the life of me can you do yours. Our president just started a war w/ a Middle Eastern country. I want my news, I want to be informed when things like this happen. KCCI is our news source for our part of the world. We live in rural Iowa and where we are, we rely on the DSM stations to inform us of what is happening. I watch many CBS shows besides the news. I am not getting my money's worth in situations like this. Your customers deserve compliance or give us our monthly payments back. I will write more letters of protest. I get off work at 3 tomorrow. I expect to find my KCCI on the air and not shut off because you can't agree at the table over fees. I'd be happy to help negotiate the deal so everyone wins. My experience? I'm a retired teacher that's why!

Your KCCl is the one that will remove their feed if DTV doesn't cave and raise your bill to renew the contract. Read your TOS and the clause that states channels and programs are subject to change at anytime.

DirecTV cannot force the channel to return the feed. When the current agreement comes up, if a new one had not been reached, then it is the local channel's choice to keep the feed on or to pull it as a negotiating tactic. In the meantime use a regular antenna to pick up all your free locals within range (possibly even "sub-channels" that DirecTV doesn't carry in the first place).

Your telling others that you "expect" that the channel will be back on when you get home does nothing. Negotiations take as long as they take, we cannot dictate when two sides come to an agreement. A offer from a random customer to "help negotiate" is not useful as negotiations are between the businesses and behind closed doors. The details of negotiations are between their assigned reps, accounts, and legal teams. Your being a "retired teacher" is not enough to put you at the negotiating table. You want to be at future negotiations, then you apply for a job to do so if you truly meet the qualifications they require.

Since TV providers do not own the channels, they each have in their Terms of Service a clause stating that channels can change at any time. If you call, you might be lucky to get a courtesy credit for the situation, but there is no requirement that they do so. Hopefully negotiations will only be a matter of days, but local affiliates seem to be increasing their demands with no sign of stopping and have no issue pulling their feed to the TV providers in order to use us customers as leverage.

(d) Our Programming Changes. Many factors affect the availability, cost and quality of programming and may influence the decision to raise prices and the amount of any increase. These include, among others, programming and other costs, consumer demand, market and shareholder expectations, and changing business conditions. Accordingly, we reserve the unrestricted right to change, rearrange, add or delete our programming packages, the selections in those packages, our prices, technologies used to deliver the Service, and any other Service we offer, at any time.
