Why is DirecTV streaming for satellite customers so horrible?
I'm a satellite customer that also likes to stream content from my computer. I've noticed that the streaming quality is not nearly as good as some competitors. Hulu is better. YouTube TV is better, Fubo is better, Pluto is better. Amazon Prime is better. Just about anything I've tried is better.
So I'm sure Juniper will pop on and ask me what is better? To that I say that frame rates are better. No stuttering is better. No pixelation is better. No goofy VideoGuard app is better. Even the DirecTV Stream app on my phone is better.
So why does DirecTV offer a streaming product for satellite customers that is so deficient? Ever wonder about that, Juniper?
At this point I'm sure Juniper is wondering what we could possibly use as a performance benchmark. Ok, the answer for that is a scrolling chyron from any news channel. Why such a performance difference?

DTV unlike streaming services that tailors the resolution to the bandwidth sends the program in the resolution it was made in.

Yeah, I've heard that song and dance before as if that's an actual answer as to why the video quality of DTV streaming is so poor.

Sheesh going to wear out my username.
DirecTV is built around satellite TV first and foremost. Streaming options have always been secondary, just a small additional perk to hopefully encourage a decision from customers.
Yes unlike dedicated streaming providers, On Demand is uploaded and delivered in the resolution it was provided in without any adjusting for changes in bandwidth on the fly. This is regardless if it was 480, 720, or 1080. That is why I chose to record/download the program first and then watch it so I don't deal with buffering issues.
This hasn't changed in the 12+ years you have had DirecTV. If the service doesn't work the way you want, then why not go with another TV provider?
However, now that there is a new co-owner it is hoped this will allow focused support on DirecTV itself. Personally I want them to fix the direction the satellite boxes were going in and avoid the restricted all-in-one setup the Genie-2 (HS17) is. But perhaps this will allow some innovation in the boxes to better support any content internet delivered so that On Demand becomes a true complement instead of more of a supplement.

Thanks for admitting openly that DTV streaming for satellite customers is an inferior product compared to other option in the streaming market.
As a bundled customer (phone, internet, satellite) DTV offers a good value, but that formula may be changing.
Juniper. Thanks for your honesty. I won't complain ever again about the inferior product DTV has chosen to offer its customers. I will be a good sheep and graze in the pastures before me.

What's there to admit? It is obvious as they are a satellite provider, not a streaming provider. I have made that point in many of my posts. So I have always been open and honest.
As I discussed before, I would love to see their On Demand options be improved to better complement the service. But if given a choice of one or the other, I would prefer they redirect their equipment focus for the satellite service. The one server to fit all I feel is going to be too restrictive long term. If they can resolve that and better support the On Demand from internet, then even better.
Complain or not is up to you. I was pointing out that you have been with DirecTV for so long with clear indication that streaming has been a secondary perk, that you have had plenty of time to switch to something that would better suit what you want. So voicing your concerns and wanting something better is certainly reasonable. But if you go years starting into decades repeating the same complaint, then that is a mixture of grazing and going "bahhh" every so often.
DirecTV is not for everyone. Go where you get the best value for yourself.

Just a point of clarification. If you are not employed by DTV, do you have access to my customer account information?

I do not have access to your customer account and naturally do not know who you are.
Your longevity with DirecTV was inferred from your public forum profile information. Shows posts going back to 2009 regarding your experience with DirecTV. Also reflects your forum account was created in 2007. So from that is how I deduced you have 12+ years of service.
