DVR/Receiver model number?
When did the problem start?
Have you tried resetting the DVR/Receiver?

What are the models of all your boxes?
Which ones are affected?
What is the exact error message?
Does this happen on any channel you try to watch?
Is the DirecTV box connected directly to the TV?
Is the TV an HD model?
Have you tried any troubleshooting at all? (such as red button reset)

If you are using AV cables, there is a ‘RES’ button on the front of the receiver if it ISN’T an HS17 or HR54. Double tap this button over and over again until you see the resolution go to 480p or 480i. From there, you should see the picture on the television. Anyway, why are you still using AV cables? HDMI would be a better picture and every TV within the past century and a half has HDMI outputs.

Yes HDMI (input on TV) would be a much better picture, as transmitting as intended and formatted correctly for the HD TV. Provided of course the box is on the correct HD settings.
However, century and a half is a bit of an exaggeration. I myself have a flat screen non-HD TV (big box, but not the traditional curved screen of a CRT) that only has A/V and coax options. And I got that TV in 2004, less than 20 years ago.

It was meant to be an exaggeration of course. Just was trying to denote that 95% of TVs present in homes around the US today likely have an HDMI output.

Fair enough. It has been over a decade since a non-HD TV was made. I got one of the last, with built-in VCR and DVD player. It is the leave me alone or I'm sick TV. Haven't gotten around to replacing it yet.
I concur that most TVs in homes these days should have at least one HDMI Input.
