Newbie question - do I need Direct TV?

We have successfully installed and are using Starlink! I am ignorant about some of this - we have a smart TV and Direct TV now. We would like to get rid of the Direct TV. If we get Hulu or Netflix, we can stream content without it, right? What would we need if we wanted to record something for viewing later? Thank you for any info.

Without Directv? Yes, you can’t stream Netflix or Hulu through Directv anyway. You don’t record things to view later with either of those services either. As to whether your Starlink internet supports streaming, I have no idea. Hopefully you have unlimited data or a very high data cap, streaming uses very much data.

DirecTV is service by satellite. It has nothing to do with Hulu, Netflix, or any other TV provider.

DIRECTV STREAM is a separate provider. Used to be called AT&T TV NOW or DIRECTV NOW. It is streaming-only, so you download an app on your chosen streaming device just like Netflix or Hulu. The DIRECTV STREAM branded box can download additional apps to it for convienence.

You do not need DirecTV or DIRECTV STREAM for Netflix or Hulu. They are each different services. But you do need a streaming device (Roku, Firestick, 'smart' TV, etc.) to download the Netflix or Hulu app to.

Actually, you can download stuff for Netflix to watch offline (if that is considered recording as I’m not sure what you mean). I’m not sure about Hulu as I’ve never subscribed to them.

It really depends on what you want to watch. If you want to get the traditional cable channels (Think TLC, FX, TNT, CNN, etc then you'll need a service that carries those. Examples would be DirecTV Stream, Hulu Plus Live, and YouTube TV (different than YouTube.) If you just want to watch movies and series then maybe Netflix and Amazon Prime along with more specific apps would be enough if you have off air antenna to watch your locals. It can be a bit daunting to sort out what all the best options are with their associated costs, but the good thing about streaming is it doesn't require a contract so you can easily try different options on a month to month basis.
