No interactive services?

I switched to Direct TV from Cox because after so many years Cox was about 340 a month for cable, internet, landline. AT&T came in at about 160 for the first year, and a bump up to low 200s after that. Similar plans, yadda yadda.

One day my wife says "How do I pull up interactive services?" I said, "What's that?"

Among other things it displays incoming landline calls on the TV screen.

I haven't found that function yet, bit nor have I seen any information saying Direct TV or AT&T offers such a thing. It's not something I use, but the wife, she relied on it.

If it's not available, we're gonna have a problem.

What exact "interactive services" are you talking about?

You do mention Caller ID on TV. That feature was outdated years ago. Only supported plain old telephone systems (otherwise known as POTS). Encouraged people to be connected so they could get software updates, order PPVs by remote, and of course anonymous viewing data.

Updates now come directly from the satellite. PPVs ordered by remote are still done if you are connected to internet, which also gives you On Demand. More people use their cell phone as their primary or only phone. So the feature hasn't been supported/updated in years, just left to run in the old software. The new version of the software and menu interface, beginning with the 2nd generation Genie (HR44) and newer, has removed the feature from the menu. Starting with the 3rd gen (HR54) there is no longer a phone jack.

So if you have the HR44, Caller ID is gone and cannot be recovered. However other HDDVRs (HR24 and earlier), as well as the 1st gen Genie (HR34) stay on the old software. So if you have the HR44 you can mix and match other non-Genie boxes to give the feature on your other TVs.
