Directv Stream 4K

I’m ready to switch to YoutubeTV 4K. Can’t believe it’s taking Directv Stream to get their acts together on this.

If 4K was a must why did you subscribe to the service? A little homework was only needed!

Some where about the same. I took a 1 1/2 year away with Youtube TV then came back for what I thought was a deal. Been here ever since.

My wife just told me it was 1995 also, she has way remebering things like that off kids birthdays.

It wasn't that. They had a squabble with ESPN like all of them do. I usually ride them out with em. But this happened right in the middle of Bowl season and I am a huge College Football Fan.

I started looking around and DTV stream had a nice offer I thought. (Unlimited DVR for life) some how I messed that up by going into a AT&T store to get Osprey Boxes and sign up while I was there.

That's how I left YTTV. 4K as I described earlier is not the biggest attraction for me I can get that thru my other services and Apps.

(But The unlimited DVR for life was a Big THING)

In response to bcbsncjlj:   the 4K offerings on youtube are pretty limited, and the Fox Sports App 4K is free without paying youtube.  I guess for a sports fanatic it is not too bad.  Frankly, AppleTV+ and Netflix are the leaders in streaming 4K right now (pay tier for Netflix), with much more content in 4K -- of course none of it is live TV.

4K playback is available on select live and on-demand content from these networks:
  • Discovery.
  • ESPN.
  • FOX Sports.
  • FX.
  • Nat Geo.
  • NBC Sports.
  • Tastemade.
  • MLB Network.

Live streaming on 4K is pretty limited with most streaming services. The emphasis is LIVE! On demand is another story.

The Superbowl was not actually 4k---it was shot in 1080p upscaled to 4k. I watched it on both the Fox sports app and Directv Stream and couldn't tell a difference.

Ludwick577:  That's correct.  But I could definitely tell the difference.   What TV do you have?  I have a brand new 75 inch Sony X90K.

Also, don't forget, it is NOT just the 4K resolution.   You can have 4K with or without HDR.  Fox Sports App uses HDR, and I can see that HDR was engaged on my TV.  So the picture was definitely better, when you combine content that does not need to be upscaled by your TV, along with HDR.

With the DirecTV Stream feed, a 4K TV would have to do its own upscaling from HD to display the picture (which usually is not better than it being sent as 4K), and you would definitely NOT have HDR via that stream.

If your TV is not HDR capable, perhaps that was the difference.  But HDR does make a big difference.

Also, I may be wrong about this, but although Fox uses 1080p cameras, I don't think they send it as 1080p for "regular" broadcasting- it is broadcast as either 720p or 1080i via cable, streaming, etc.   So upscaled 1080p to 4K is still way better than downscaled 1080i or 720p.

ATSC refers to over-the-air (OTA) antenna television. DirecTV is service by satellite. The technologies are different. And since S.K. prototype deployment, DirecTV has been dealing with the acquisition by AT&T, shutting down the MPEG-2/SD-only broadcasts and getting people to swap out their legacy equipment, the pandemic, and now we have the new co-owner taking the lead on operations.

With all those factors, updating the product as you say is not going to be a fast process. And satellite tech for TV didn't update fast to begin with.

S.K. can do what they they want as are not competition.

They are saying that once they get the ATSC 3.0 up and running on all cylinders. That they will be able to supply all the offerings of Cable and Satellite via over the air antenna. This is one of biggest pushes by the Federal Government is to deliver all to the masses anywhere in the USA. They will use repeater towers on exsisting cell and older Microwave towers.

The big push for Rural Broadband is also part of this deal.

It is not if it will happen but when. We will have no more cables in ground on poles or under water. This a big deal and feds have thrown open the purse strings to make sure it happens. Just look up some of the capabilities of ATSC 3.0.

Would DirecTV need to launch new satellites, in addition to new models of receivers and clients, in order to accommodate ATSC 3.0 and higher?

As much as I want to see a HR25 (theoretical, not a real model number at this time), perhaps new equipment will need a new model identifier for the new line. As long as we get receivers and not client-only like the Genie-2 (HS17).

Promises, promises, promises. Most likely any additional capacity provided by ATCS3.0 will be used for more shopping channels. Any of the promised uses are still many years away. Check out "Antenna Man's" excellent YouTube videos on the currrent state of ATSC3.0.
