Local NBC affiliate

I switched recently to Directv because youtube tv dropped one of my local stations. Now Directv has dropped my local NBC (KPNX) station.  Please tell me why I made the switch. Will this issue be resolved or should I look for another provider?

DirecTV and UVerse lost the Tegna owned stations tonight.  This is the SAME crap we just went through with Nextstar and them.  Tegna wants to charge more, DirecTV thinks its too much, neither side can agree so they both act like little babies and point the finger at each other but in the mean time, the stations get pulled. In the end (however long that may be), DirecTV will agree to pay more then they want to pay to Tegna, we will get the stations back, and if you dont have a contract, your bill will go up.  Its all a load of crap if you ask me and both companies are greedy as (Edited per community guidelines).  Hope they both lose customers and advertisers.  I plan to call DirecTV tomorrow morning and ask how much credit they will be giving me for the loss of this channel.  I signed a contract with them and now I'm missing a channel.  Seems like breach of contract to me.

Simple answer this is a carriage negotiation. Tegna wants to be paid more than DirecTV considers reasonable. As Tegna owns the channel it is their right to pull the feed.

Both companies are acting within their best interests. As higher network costs mean that much higher to our bills, I personally am against that for channels I can get free over the air. Certainly not what I went to pay TV for.

There is no breach of contract. Not a single provider guarantees you will have any channel in particular or that it is protected against this situation. They don't own the channels so would be impossible to promise such a thing. As such the Terms of Service do have clause that channels may change at any time.

@Juniper They can certainly say that but the bottom line is I signed a contract. I’ve used that method to get out of contracts with them and other companies before and they have never fought me. They simply let me walk away and not pay any fees. Will I do that in this case?  No. I can get the station I lost over my antenna.

But this shit is getting old. Especially when the bottom line is DTV will end up paying more than they want to and then pass  it on to their customers. Just skip alll this crap and get to that point already. We JUST went through this shit with Nexstar. They know what deal they ended up making with Nexstar. Just make the same basic deal (adjusted because TEGNA has way less stations) and move on.

I also thought TEGNA was bought by another company and as part of that deal The Texas TEGNA stations were sold or taken over by Cox. Did that not go though?  Because if it did the Texas stations shouldn’t be included in this.

The contract you signed never promised you would always have any particular channel. What you signed acknowledged that programming may change at any time. That is part of your contract.

Yes this has gotten old, but this is the state of the industry. Networks get an agreement to be carried for so long. When that agreement comes up they start negotiating to get the best deal they can. Networks want raised costs and TV providers want to pay less, that is their business interest.

If TV providers (not just DirecTV) don't negotiate then the high rates you complain about will be that much higher. I would love if TV providers could avoid any increase at all or even reduce that cost, but realistically that doesn't happen.

Yes many went through this with Nexstar. And that was one of the worst which so far Tegna has not come close to. I do hope this time doesn't change that, but we shall see.

And this will happen again and again as it how the TV industry is designed around.

Check out this excellent video explaining why corporate network owners keep demanding more and more money from cable, satellite and streaming providers to deliver FREE off-air TV stations ....

I am now stuck paying Peacock to get access to NBC network programming.  I do not have an antenna nor do I want want, and I certainly am not getting into installing it on my house.  That is why I PAY Directv.  Seems to me = they should cover my Peacock streaming.

To some extent, they will pay for it.  Go to tvpromise.com.   Directv will give you a $10 discount for your inconvenience for losing NBC.  Peacock, including your local NBC affiliate, is $3.99 if purchased through Directv Steam.   So, you can use the discount of $10 to cover at least 2 months.

Using a antenna is just an option. If you don't want one fair enough. (Though not all of us need to put it on the roof, there are indoor models).

No, they are NOT obligated to cover your streaming because Tegna took their channels away. The Terms of Service state that channels may change at any time. You are NOT entitled to a single channel, certainly not any particular local channel. As long as you get a single local channel, you are getting exactly what you pay for.

That being said, DirecTV is providing a one-time $10 credit as a courtesy while the negotiations are ongoing. You log into your account online or call to take advantage of it. They are not required to do this, but have chosen to do so.

If you pay TV just for locals then lower down to the Family package. Otherwise watch one of the many other channels that don't have a free broadcast, the main reason to go to pay TV. That or time to find something else to do if you realize you cannot survive without a local or two.

Jal123 - thanks for the tip.  I was buying it through Amazon prime as I did not know I could do it this way.  As soon as this month is up - I will buy through directv stream.  Hope they keep this price throughout out this very inconvenient issue.

Just be prepared for streaming cost increases. Also if you purchase a service through a TV provider, that negotiation usually overrides it because your local affiliate (be it for NBC or  otherwise), tends to be blocked out regardless because it still recognizes your DirecTV credentials.

You would have to get the other service completely independent from DirecTV to absolutely sure it would be unaffected by the negotiation. Just a caution.
