best option for cabin (6 Months)

Hello my grandpa is 86 and wants direct tv at his cabin in northern MN but is only up there for 6 months of the year and not in the winter. So what Is the best option for him for needing only 6 months of service. He needs to have Bally sports and Gunsmoke are his favorites. Also only needs 1 basic box no dvr or anything fancy. He had direct tv up there like 20 years ago so there is the old dish still on the roof.

Thanks,

Does your grandpa currently have DIRECTV service elsewhere? Or does he plan to have just one account at the cabin?

Your grandpa’s best bet is an H24/H25 receiver along with a SWM slimline DIRECTV dish. This will need to replace both the dish and pole on his roof because SD/MPEG2 is being phased out as we speak and his dish will become essentially useless. If this is his FIRST account with DIRECTV, when calling them for installation, request just ONE receiver which would be the H24/H25. Although, DIRECTV will be very persistent on a Genie HD DVR. Therefore, there isn’t a guarantee on which one he will receive.

As far as him using the service for only 6 months, that works perfectly fine. He’ll just need to call to put the account on vacation for six months every year. (the time he isn’t there)

Bally Sports depends on your zip code. As far as Gunsmoke goes, I believe that program is on TV LAND, which is included in the ENTERTAINMENT package.

A Regional Sport Network (RSN) and professional teams are based on the zip code. Your grandfather must live within that channel and team's viewing market or he doesn't get them no matter what package he has.

DirecTV does allow an account to be suspended (vacation hold) for up to 6 months within a 12 month period. This should line up to what he wants.

Keep in mind when he starts DirecTV, the intro offer has a 24-month service agreement. Only active service counts, so the suspended time puts that agreement on hold as well. So if he is consistent about the 6 month suspension, then that would result in pushing the agreement date out to the 48 month mark in the end (so 4 years instead of 2).
