5. CANCELLATION

(a) Term. The term of this Agreement is indefinite and Service will continue until canceled as provided herein. Unless you notify us that you wish to cancel it, we will automatically renew Service that you subscribe to on a periodic basis, including any monthly or annual subscriptions and seasonal sports subscriptions, as long as we continue to carry the Service.

(b) Your Cancellation. You may cancel Service by calling us at 877.793.2083. Your cancellation is effective on the last day of the billing cycle in which you cancel (exceptions may apply to certain promotional periods and must be in writing) and you will not receive a prorated credit or refund for any portion of Service cancelled (subject to applicable law). You will still be responsible for payment of all outstanding balances accrued through that effective date. You will receive Service through the effective date of your cancellation. If you cancel Service or change your Service package, you may be subject to an Early Termination Fee if you agreed to a programming agreement with DIRECTV and have failed to maintain the required programming package for the required period of time. For Services sold only in blocks of one month or multiples of one month, if you cancel such Service, we will credit you only for full months not used. For example, if you subscribe for a year of such Service from January through December but cancel on March 10, we will credit you for the subscription fees for April through December. However, we will not credit any fees for January through March. Additionally, we will not credit seasonal sports subscriptions after the season starts unless we provide otherwise in writing.

@myid4here

They stopped prorating in Jan 2019 with notice given out the prior year about the change to the Terms of Service. As such, when you cancel you still pay for and receive service through the end of the bill month in which you called to cancel.

Please read this if you receive DIRECTV, AT&T U-verse® TV, AT&T Internet, AT&T Phone, and/or AT&T Fixed Wireless service(s). We want to remind you that you’re billed in advance for recurring service(s) and/or programming charges and applicable fees based on the terms of your current service agreement(s) with us. Starting January 14, 2019, subject to applicable laws, we’re updating your agreement(s) to include your recurring service(s)/programming charges and fees won’t be prorated if you cancel the above service(s) on any day other than the last day of your billing cycle. Your service(s) will continue until the end of your billing cycle but you won’t get a refund (prorated credits) for any remaining days left in your billing cycle. For products not listed above, refer to their terms of service for more information.

I’ve had service since September 2018. It’s not in agreement that I signed. At least I know now I just ‘couldn’t’ find it.
Did they mail this notice, or how did I receive it? Thought I was canceling close to the end of billing cycle, boy am I off! They might have to take payments I cannot afford 2 services for 2+ months,. Thanks for the info.

The notice I posted was emailed in Novermber 2018. I believe paper bills would have had a ToS update insert at some point, which too many people just ignore and trash.

You got service just before they changed the billing policy. Unfortuantely it is not something you can be grandfathered in. This was a change across the board to all customers. And other service companies have done the same before and after so appears to have become the standard.

Closing an account with any company, I highly suggest before doing so checking the bill to be sure of the important dates on it (when bill produces, the service month it is for, and when bill is normally due, etc.).

4. CHANGES IN CONTRACT TERMS

We reserve the right to change the terms and conditions on which we offer Service including adding new terms or deleting existing ones. We will provide you with notice of material changes either in your monthly bill or separately. You always have the right to cancel your Service, in whole or in part, at any time, and you may do so if you do not accept any such changed terms or conditions. See Sections 5(b), (d) and (e) below. If you elect not to cancel your Service after receiving a new Customer Agreement, your continued receipt of Service constitutes acceptance of the changed terms and conditions. If you notify us that you do not accept such terms and conditions, then we may cancel your Service as provided in Section 5.
