CSR couldn't do math after I called to make changes to account.

I had called to do some account management  after I checked to see if the action I took to remove the Sports Channel pack the previous month, was actually noted on the current bill, The answer was they deducted part of the months charge, but still left the Sports pack in place after I had called to remove it earlier in the month. My bill was over $150 just for TV options. They left the sprts pack fee in place at $8.99 a month (Boston area). I was told they can't break up the package to remove the Sprts pack, You know why? Because it's guaranteed income ( from all the "suckers" who put up the extra amount while their sports pack is in place, But when you call to remove the Sports pack ( because there really isn;t any live sports contests to watch, they can remove the Sports pkg., but not the $10 sprts fee).  What kind of crap is that. Then looking closer at the bill, I see I'm paying $9 a month more for Direct TV Protection. Asking the CSR what that charge covers, I'm told that covers the $19.99 charge I would have if I needed to replace the receiver box or remote. That's coming off when I see I'm paying $120 a year. This a series of blatant ripoffs that customer service can't/won't undo. ,

The Sports Pack is optional and is $13.99.

What I believe you are referring to is the Regional Sports Network (RSN) fee. That is NOT optional. It is included in packages Choice and higher as you get the RSNs and specific teams for your address. www.directv.com/rsn

The RSN fee has nothing to do with if you have the Sports Pack or not. The RSN fee is for in-market RSNs, the Sports Pack is for out of market RSNs (professional games still blacked out of course) and specialty sport channels.

The only way to not have the RSN fee is to be on a package without RSNs which would be Family, Select, and Entertainment.

The CRS have no option to change that as that is how the billing model is set with agreements from the networks. The alternative was raising the package costs across the board to average out the RSN fee for everybody, which they used to do. But as of a few years ago, the RSN fee is now transparent so you can see how much your local teams cost you.

The Equipment Protection Plan ($8.99) is also optional. It covers delivery of boxes ($19.95), service calls ($99), and remote replacements ($15). Since the one-time costs should not be used very often, and remotes can be cheaper through other retailers (i.e. Amazon, assumedly as they get a bulk deal), I agree the EPP is not worth it for many.

Personally I see the EPP only worth it for those that prefer a small cost already in their monthly budget, instead of needing to be prepared for reserve funds as needed. Had a friend who needed this as he was not good with his finances.

But since it is optional, you could have removed it at any time. Whenever you start a new service, or make changes to an existing service, read through the bill. That way everything is as expected and you do not get caught by any surprises or misunderstandings months or years later.
