How to close DirecTV account?

I've made multiple phone calls today lasting a total of 2-1/2 hours trying to close my account. Multiple calls due to being disconnected, on hold for up to 25 minutes, or being connected to someone with such a heavy accent and poor phone reception I could not understand her. Eventually I made it from Customer Service to an agent, then to the Loyalty Department, and finally to a VIP agent, who said I needed to contact Customer Service to close my account! Hello? Does anyone know how to get an account closed?

It shouldn't be that hard. Hopefully you're calling the correct phone number: 1 (800) 531-5000.

Say "cancel" at the voice prompt and you'll connect with a specialist. That's the only way to close your DirecTV account. Be sure to ask about equipment returns and any early contract termination fees.

I agree it shouldn't be that hard. That why I was so frustrated all afternoon. Thanks for your reply. I will try saying "cancel" and see what happens.

Call DirecTV's official customer support number and when you get the voice system say "cancel" as that should route you directly.

Be prepared for offers to retain your business, as that is required of them. If they don't work for you, politely decline and continue with cancellation.

Be aware that no matter what day within your service month you cancel, you are still paying for the full bill. Cancellations as of a year ago do not prorate for any unused days in your bill month.

If you have any returnable boxes, take them to a FedEx or UPS store that participates in the free return program. Just get receipt showing they took possession. If over 10 miles from a shipper, then DirecTV should use the old process of sending you a prepaid return kit. What are the models of each box you have?

I cancelled my service with more than a half of a month left. I expected that by serviced would be pro rata but was told I was responsible for the whole month and should not expect the return for the unused portion. Seems wrong that I have to pay for unused service. You wonder if AT&T ever wants me as a customer??? I think not!!

Good to know. I'll keep my service until near the end of the cycle. What did you do with your satellite dish? And, the cable box on the wall outside my house is locked. Was yours locked too?

I think the dish stays on the roof until I remove, All the cables outside also remains. I don't have a box on the outside of my house. At the official end of my service they supposedly will send instructions on what I need to take to UPS to return.

The prorated policy was changed last year, you now pay for and receive service until the end of the billing cycle.

You own the dish and everything but the receivers to do what you want with them.

OK - so we're stuck with all the outside stuff. I have a tech geek coming Thursday to remove everything he can and then set us up with either Hulu or YouTubeTV. Recommendations?
