MLB Sports Package Fee

According to a letter I read from ESPN which I accessed from your website, the MLB has suspended their starting games until mid-May. And that is a guess on their part, because they may not have a season at all.

Therefore, I am suspending my MLB payment for the season. If they do have a season, please feel free to bill me for the time they play. Here is the link I followed from your website:

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/28923254/what-2020-mlb-season-look-once-gets-going

Sincerely,

Rhonda

All,

With the professional baseball and soccer seasons postponed or suspended, our customers who subscribed to MLB Extra Innings and MLS Direct Kick will receive credits for any payments already made toward their subscription and we have postponed future charges until we learn more from the leagues.

We are also extending our cancellation policy for both products so that customers have two weeks from when the season starts (or resumes) to decide whether they want to cancel their subscription.

We continue to monitor the situation closely and are in contact with programmers and sports leagues as they plan their next steps. Any rebates we receive from programmers and sports leagues will be provided to our customers.

Thanks,

The AT&T Community Team

@ATTCommunityTeam Wow. Maybe you should have sent this message BEFORE wrongly billing for the MLB season. Maybe you should have sent this message BEFORE the season was initially to be delayed (a minimum of 2 weeks). Too little, WAY too flipping late. Start of non-season was THREE WEEKS ago, and you allowed people to get ticked off and spend hours calling. Caused me to cancel not just the MLB package but DirecTV entirely. I pray that others follow: WAYYYYYYY. Too. Late.

MLB season is not wrongly billed. As season was not cancelled, billing continued as normal. With further confirmation of delay, they naturally extended to time to cut off as it has always been before season started.

With further stay at home extensions and communication with MLB that they have strict agreements with, they are now reversing MLB installments with charges to rebill once a new official season start date is confirmed.

But if you canceled DirecTV over this, then don't go to any other TV provider that has sports. The sports leagues are very strict about keeping billing going. After all much of our country values sports over anything else so is one of the biggest money makers.

@Poffrick

That is not their normal customer service. Welcome to Covid-19. Many of their call centers are closed, and additional employees and techs are on extended leave because of governmental stay at home orders. But guess what, there is no shortage of people calling in. This leaves them very understaffed for something that they have no control over.

It is a bad situation all around, but this is not one to blame on customer support. They are doing what they can amidst tough conditions.

That’s not the way it works. You can’t just not pay what you are billed. That will result in all your service getting cut off. If you don’t want to pay for the mlb now, call and cancel. You can re-subscribe when the season finally starts. You are paying for the season. As of now, nothing has been cancelled, only postponed. There is no reason not to bill for it now. When and if the season is actually shortened or cancelled, you’ll get the appropriate credit or refund.

To All Contributors and Others: If you are not aware of how customer service is working then let me be the first to inform you that many call centers are SHUT down and others are working with smaller staff due to Covid 19. I was lucky enough on my second attempt, to speak with a CSR after being on hold for 20 min.

There is a policy according to the person I spoke with regarding sports packages. But since I only spoke to the CSR about MLB I shouldn't be advising anyone about their particular sport's package policy. Let me just say there is a way to handle this that I feel is fair and equitable. I would suggest that you plan on popcorn and a movie while you wait on hold until you can speak with a customer service representative in the billing department.

Good Luck.

I have been on extensive hold so I am documenting it here. Thank you Rhonda. I will be removing the MLB $30.50 fee (plus taxes) from the current invoice I received today. I want to ensure I am not charged delinquent fees and am requesting that my invoice be corrected. I also had subscribed to NHL Center Ice @$41.25 in 4 payments. Hockey season was suspended 03-12-2020 which is one month short. How do I receive credit for that service? Thank you.

This forum is not customer support. You must call to cancel. This is also a public forum, please remove your account number. As for the NHL, as of now they have not cancelled any games, only postponed. There is still talk they will play all remaining games when they resume. There is nothing to credit you for yet.

You must call DirecTV to discuss your bill. This is a public forum of other customers so nothing you "document" here has any affect on your account.

And remember not paying it does not remove it from your bill. Until DirecTV adjusts the amount, it remains a valid charge. So not paying will just result in late fees and other collection activity that would be valid.

@Mtnhome Thank you for editing out the account #. I debated whether or not to have included it initially. I realize this is a public forum but short of not being able to reach anyone due to lowered staff, I thought I'd make my point known here. Yes, nothing in sports has been cancelled but yes suspended. So why shouldn't the end user's account be suspended of these charges also and resume if/when the seasons resume?

No one here can say why but my guess is the billing system just isn’t set up to do that. Once again, no games have been cancelled yet, only postponed but there is simply no reason to postpone the billing. That means making changes. If they make changes, more than likely the bills just get messed up. You’ll get credits when appropriate.

@Rhon54

Unfortunately that is not how it works. If you choose not to pay your bill in full, then you go down the past due route (staring with a late fee). The season is delayed, but not the installments for the sport subscription. Unless DirecTV adjusts the amount it remains a valid charge. It is not up to you to make that decision.

You must call DirecTV to discuss the situation. Nothing you post here has any affect on your account as this is a public customer to customer forum.

Lots of people are being inconvenienced by the current situation. Reduced call center staffing, record-setting call volumes and a growing service backlog are causing difficulty in getting through to AT&T (and the other communication companies, judging by social media). You'll have to keep trying and be patient.

I have been trying to get a hold of someone about the MLB package for 4 days. I have used the chat box, emailed the chat, waited on hold and I am still on hold now . The automated chat was no help and I have had more issues when I need assistance since ATT took over. I never had issues with Direct TV I have been with Direct TV for 10 years but ATT changed too many things and the website is not helpful. I hope someone replies soon. I do not want the MLB package and I hope not to be charged. Very disappointing.

Why are you charging for MLB Extra Innings when the MLB season has been delayed indefinitely? This makes no sense and should be changed with charges levied to date refunded.

Then DirecTV should be discussing this issue with MLB. But the fact remains that the consumer is being charged for a product/service that isn't being delivered. As such, as any responsible company would, a refund is in order.

You pay for the season and every year you start paying before the season starts. This year is no different. As of now, no games have been cancelled, only postponed. When and if games are actually cancelled, I’m sure you’ll get the appropriate credit. If you don’t want to pay now and get whatever you’ve paid refunded, call and cancel. You can always re-subscribe when the season finally starts.

The system automatically bills for sports subscriptions it has no way of not billing for something like games being postponed UNTIL someone programs that into it which hasn't happened yet since the season hasn't been cancelled yet only postponed

MLB currently has delayed the start of the 2020 season by at least two weeks. AT&T will adjust the time period for cancellations based on the new start date.

So the installments for MLB Extra Innings bills as normal. But they have an extended opt-out time because of the delay.

This is subject to change of course, but this is how it stands right now.
