You cannot. The receivers are tied to the account. Upon him disconnecting he had to either return or recycle the boxes, depending on the models. Once deactivated, boxes are not allowed to be reactivated. This is because DirecTV owns the boxes so they cannot be transferred directly between customers for various reasons. Hopefully they are non-returnable models, or your landlord will get charged non-return fees.
The option is to call DirecTV or go to www.directv.com to order service. You would have an install with equipment tied to your account. Depends on the existing dish and cabling if any of it can be used or if it is outdated. Either way, standard install will provide what is needed. Just make sure to read the order confirmation DirecTV emails you BEFORE you are installed/activated to make sure everything is as expected (including amount and length of discounts).
